Here is my favorite chess quote: "Hon, please put aside those silly chess pieces, we have a date in the bedroom!"

johnpaul799
but the thing that was great about capablanca was that he really spoke his mind. he said what he believed was true, he said what he felt. he wanted to change the rules ( of chess ) already, back in the twenties, because he said chess was getting played out. he was right. now chess is completely dead. ITS JUST MEMORISATION AND PREARRANGEMENT. its a terrible game now. very uncreative.

I haven't read all the 35 pages so I do not know if this quote has appeared...but my favourite quote is.....When the game is over , the king and pawn go into the same box..

"I missed a shot." (Every chess player) I'll bet that quote applies to all of us, I know it does to me, lol.

It is alright if your position is bad, just as long as your opponents position is worse!

Chess is an escape -– an escape from reality. It is an “out,” a kind of “make-work” for a man of higher than average intelligence who is afraid to live, but cannot leave his mind unemployed, and devotes it to a placebo -– thus surrendering to others the living world he has rejected as too hard to understand.

Haha. Well I don't like everything Rand has to say. In response to her assertion that chess is an escape, sure there might be a degree of escapism, but studying chess can really develop one's mind in new and exciting ways. So there can be benefits to studying chess...and really it's my life and Ayn Rand can't tell me what to do.  Plus me engaging the elite military industrial politico financial media complex seems pointless, so I'll stick with my chess research. Thank you very much.

Chess is not an escape. It's the perfect prison : the labyrinth from which you won't find the exit. Lost in the pursuit of beauty.

Ayn Rand was such a pompous mediocrity, and as they tend to be,she was utterly wrong about, well, just about everything she propagandized.

Well enough about that supremely unpleasant windbag. As far as chess quotes are concerned, the problem with them, and quotes in general,is that while they may be witty and have a grain of truth to them,it's only a grain,it's difficult to find one that states something universal.Tartakower may have said..."No one ever won a game by resigning." Truly. You know what else no one ever did...checkmate an opponent while possessing only a king.I nominate the following two quotes about chess :

1)"The blunders are all there on the board, waiting to be made." --- Tartakover

2)"Pigeon Chess... the pigeon knocks over all the pieces, craps on the board, then struts around like it won the game."---unknown

BTW...there are some great quotes in this thread!

And none by me :(

it is no mean task to reply correctly to lasker's wrong moves.

it extremely rarely occurs to him to do something creative on the chess board.
