"To all other chessplayers, the mistake, not the pawn, is the soul of chess. Without mistakes no wins. Long live the blunder! What would chess be without all the hung pieces, the mates in one, the blindness, the Fingerfehler, the mix-ups of move-order, the Nf5xd6 of Amsterdam 1956 or the d4-d3 of Havana 1965?"

"While the Baroque rules of chess could only have been created by humans, the rules of Go are so elegant, organic, and rigorously logical that if intelligent life forms exist elsewhere in the universe, they almost certainly play Go."

During my first chess tournament in Brampton, Ontario, I was playing a far superior opponent and was using brutal but effective moves.  He was trying to be clever and I was playing to win.  Ten moves into the game he looked up at me like I was the devil incarnate and said, "Absolutely ruthless", and walked away from the board.

My favourite "irl" chess quote (all the "real" ones I love are already in this thread :P) was last round in a weekend tournament. Me and my opponent were both far away from achieving any kind of meaningful tournament overall tournament score, so I offered a draw quite early (maybe after 12 moves or so) as Black in an even position.

He was silent for maybe half a minute, drew a deep breath, and just said:

"That's not why we're here."

Needless to say, he outplayed me and won easily :D

At a local tournament some years ago a friend of mine was paired against Chess Life columnist Alex Dunne.  He walked up all friendly and asked, "How are you, Mr. Dunne?" Dunne looked him in the eye and replied, "Strong."  He crushed my friend in like 25 moves.

I am still a victim of chess. It has all the beauty of art -- and much more. It cannot be commercialized. Chess is much purer than art in its social position.

That's actually a pretty awesome reply from your opponent. Thanks for sharing! Smile
