The thing that stands out for me is, the privilege of playing people all over the world and also the friendships you make along the way.

The challenge of trying to get better.

Hmm? This is a good question and I think my answer to it has changed over time. Currently, I believe the element of chess I like the most is realizing how the long-term work pays off. Another hobby of mine is Texas Hold'em Poker (NL) and embracing "luck" and variance has a lot of benefits - ultimately it is this fact that makes the game profitable. On the opposite side of the "luck spectrum", chess has no luck and this has its own merits.

It is rewarding to know that chess can be 100% objective and we can work on improving our chess ability. As good as you can get skill-wise in poker, pocket Aces will still always be about 85% favorites against a random hand. The statistics do not change. Even with the best hand preflop (pocket Aces), this means we can do "everything right" and still lose about 15% of the time.

In chess, if we did everything objectively "right", then theoretically, we should win or draw 100% of the time and that is a pretty cool thing. happy.png

Even still, never fold pocket aces preflop. One of my rules lol.

Chess as a personal endeavour, is seeing the fruition come to life even though the milestones are farther than closer apart.
