I'm hoping to buy a tournament-level chess set in the near future. Right now I'm planning on triple-weighted tournament pieces, a mousepad-type board, and a DGT North American clock, which I believe are all tournament acceptable. If you have any suggestions, advice, personal experience, etc. about this I'd be happy to hear it!

People who bring nice sets get upset when somebody slams down the pieces.

That's true. At least it wouldn't be like some thousand dollar carved themed set on a glass board or something like that. And I do have a little magnetic travel one that fits in my pocket. I can turn the whole thing upside down and the pieces stay on. Quite useful.

Traditional wood sets with carved pieces like UTILIZED in the tour is best for old fashioned chess with a nice clock. Perhaps joining a chess club that meets in a hall for a night of chess.
Eventually that would be nice. My price range at the moment isn't that high. I've looked around and haven't seen any active clubs in my area, so I hope to start one in a few weeks with some friends.
The House of Staunton has best traditional chess sets in all various price ranges. I have three of them. Two for full sized tables one one carry on magnetic one for travel.
They last for generations most in $100-$200 range are excellent.
