A passed pawn.
A Damiano's mate is one with a queen supported by a pawn, but normally on the 6th.
you may be thinking of pion coiffé (capped pawn). This was a form of handicapping in which the better player had to mate with a specific pawn (which was marked at the beginning of the game). The play with such a handicap may well follow the manner you mention.
Hmm. Not ringing any bells. Many thanks, though. In my description, the f7 square might have been a better example, but the point is the same. The pawn is placed far in advance early in the game and contributes to the checkmate without promotion.
Can't a pawn be described as a "rogue" as well? I'm forgetting all of this stuff.
@blake78613: Starbucks makes an excellent pion coiffé. I get it iced. ;-)
"Thorn Pawns", "Fawn Pawns", and "Nail Pawns"

Isn't there a name for a pawn that fits the following description:
- Makes it's way to the 7th rank early in the game;
- Usually positioned near the king, like on the h7 square, for example;
- Lays in wait for the entire game;
- Plays a key role in the checkmate delivered to the opponent.
I thought there was a special name for this kind of pawn, but I just can't remember it. There are passed pawns, backward pawns, and isolated pawns. Lots of different kinds of pawns. Was it all a dream? If not, can someone help me remember what it is called?
