I know this is away from Fischer, but it might have some bearing on the myth about the man. I said previously that Morphy probably thought blacks were inferior. I assumed that because he was from an aristocratic family in New Orleans...and we know the worth of assumptions. I don't even know if his family owned any slaves prior to Civil War. That he wasn't a successful lawyer because of his anti-war stance, I see no evidence of that. I read somewher that he even hung out his shingle in New York with the same miserable results. Maybe he just didn't have what it takes to be a good lawyer. And i'm not talking about knowledge of the law, i'm talking about self-promotion, skills at handling people. Getting back to Fischer. I think he also lacked those same skills. He had through great effort become best in his field and had begun to think that it was all a waste of time. Morphy had lawyering to fall backon (he thought). Fischer, from his point of view, had nothing.
If you are the best in the world at something why do you need something to "fall back on " ? Are these questions asked about such people as Beethoven, Bach, Ali, Michael Jordan, Michael Angelo ??
