I've played chess since youth, but only knew basic moves and took many years off.Seven months ago I got into this fun site and have begun to study and play.I began with 1000 and quickly dropped to 430(lower than Patzer,I know).Well, after digesting much good advice here and reading 2 books I've slowly climbed to 814.Reasonably happy, but wonder what's considered a fairly good 10 minute blitz rating after this amount of time? To be honest,I'm relatively serious about good play and though I enjoy reading books and study,it's just a hobby to me.Still, the competitive genes do kick in a bit,so I ask you folks what your thoughts are?  Much thanks...and...I really admire the forum members here.....except when you beat me! -

Please inform us as to which fun site you are referring to and then maybe we can answer your question better.

 Shock...Basically,you sated in a nice way,that I suck!-happy.png I'm pretty much aware of that...Ha.

Santiago...very nice to offer a free lesson, but I'm basically going to stick with my own plan, rather than take up your generous offer....More gratifying to me-happy.png

Here's my plan....

Play fairly often, long and blitz games....There are three chess clubs where I live.

Do a ton of tactics/watch videos related to my level and interest.

Book study// I've finished The Complete Idiot's Guide(really enjoyed that book,as a novice who had played since my youth, but knew nothing.

I finished Discovering Chess Openings and just finished Attacking The King!

I'm about to start....The Amateur's Mind

Lined up,after that is.....The Winning Way,Simple Attacking Plans and My System(in that order)

I'd hope to be ready for The Art Of Attack,Silman's End Game course and Modern Chess Openings, after all of that....I'll probably follow up with some other books, beyond that.

Chess is really a very enjoyable hobby for me(and obviously others)but I'm not going to get discouraged by my ratins as long as I feel that I can understand the game more and more,as I go along.....Thanks for the comments-happy.png

Also keep in mind that it is much much easier to get from 400 to 800 than to move from 1000 to 1400.

Takes a bit of work to get your rating down to 400 in the first place, especially after Glicko sets in..

What's Glicko?

I crossed 1800. I review my games. I could see worst moves in my games. I m Yet to learn a lot.

Out of all the people here saying 1700 is decent, only one is actually anywhere near it lol. On this site friend, 1200 is good. 1400-1600 is great. But decent? I'd say hovering between 1000-1100 is decent. Hope this answers your question.

I recently peaked at 1794 Rapid and plan to surpass 1800 in the next month. Hopefully I (a 1700 player) can toss in my opinion.

I'd say that 1200 is a decent rating for anyone who is not a club or tournament player. At that level, you are easily strong enough to beat anyone who doesn't play chess much or those who are solid beginners. You could go to a party and beat everyone there at a game. You're an above-average player on Chess.com. This is the entry point for intermediate-level players, and you begin to understand the game better.

According to IM Levy Rozman though, 1600 is the point where you begin playing 'real chess'. Blunders occur much less frequently than at lower levels, and those that do occur are generally slight and rarely lose the game on the spot. Openings matter much more, tactics are important and you begin thinking in terms of long-term plans, positional chess, more advanced endgames, and you can see the entire board at this point.

In the grand scheme of the chess playing world, 1600 is a decent 10-minute rating.

Duck

10 minute isn't blitz anymore rip

AyushBlundersAgain

2000+ is decent

I'm in my 70s and just started playing chess (rapid 10 min) when covid hit. It's been a lot of fun and I enjoy a few games each day. It's all about having fun and relaxing for me. Not turning it into chore, studying and worrying about ratings. But answering the question. I seem to go up to 1000 then down to 800 a couple of times a year. Right now I'm at 975. Average? who knows and who cares? Cheers all.
