What should I do now?

I've been playing chess on occasion for a couple years now and on chess.com for a couple months. My rating currently fluctuates around in the 1300s range. I've never formally studied chess or done any training programs outside of the tactics trainer on this website. I've noticed that I haven't been improving rating-wise overall. So should I consider buying a chess book or something of that sort? If so, what are some good ones for my level?

Chess.com has some great tools such as chess mentor, and tactics trainer. I would recommend buying an opening textbook such as the M.C.O (Modern chess openings) I hit the wall when I was your level as well and studying openings lifted me around a hundred points in six months. Also, study endgames and positional evaluation. You could check the shop on chess.com. But above all - Play lots! Remember chess progress rapidly slows down after the beginner stage. It can get so it's barely noticeable. (Sometimes you even go backwards Yell)

Thank you for all the input. I'm looking at a couple books now. Another question: how accurate are the ratings on chess.com to what my actual rating would be, because i feel like I play better over the board, because I can keep my thoughts organized instead of spreading them over 30 or so games. However, everyone else probably suffers similarly, so.... what should I expect?

Every player treats correspondence chess differently. Some play 25 games and make their moves quickly, others play 5 games and give alot of time and study to each. And everything in between. For this reason correspondence chess can't be used as an accurate estimate of your true rating. The best way to find your true rating is to actually play in fide or uscf rated events.
