Tactics will only get you so far. You will have to work on your positional play.
what tactic book help u get over that hump
Spaghettiface is of course only speaking from his own experience (correction, his own ignorance).
He wouldn't know a tactic if it shot him in the face.

hi, im a big fan of tactical puzzle books. i started out as a complete rookie. 1100 icc standard to 1700-1800 right now. i mean i went through john bain's chess tactics for students 7 times, bobby fischer teaches chess, winning chess strategy for kids, winning chess tactics for juniors 7 times, and chess school 1b. i flew through the ranks by tactics alone. after i finished the 3 move books, i was lost because all the other books seem too advanced. i currently have 303 tricky tactics, combination challenge, and the complete chess workout which i plan to do those 3 next. which tactic book hit the sweet spot for you after you mastered 3 move combos / thanks. Tim

Uhohspaghettio1 and NinjaBob -in my research, Bobby fischer and Magnus Carlsen said that tactics could get you at least to Expert level. i have De la Maza's book , rapid chess improvement , and he reached 2100 by doing 7 circles with ct-art. Dan Heisman said in a novice nook that his son reached 1800 uscf and nevered studied a book, but he knew how to keep his peices safe. i mean positional play means very little in class player's games if they are loosing to moves where they allowed their opponent to beat them with a simple tactic that they over looked. so yes tactics are everything to me. its what got me to where im at.
TheGreatOogieBoogie - have ct-art but my problem is that i cant take a computer everywhere i go like a book. that's why i like books. i cant put it on an i pad or tablet because they have no hard drive. i work a job where it get busy and slow. i like to do my tactics when the crowd slows down. in my personal opinion 7 circles work better for me than just doing random tactics like on chess tempo. if anybody could testify how they improved by studying from chess tempo, then i would consider just abandoning all books and start studying from my cell phone with chess tempo.

You might like Ray Cheng's book. It features more than tactics, but in the same format as a puzzle book. Worth a look.
I really like Dan Heisman's tactics book and Susan Polgar's book. These are probably more basic than you might like, but I think they've helped me improve (still got a long way to go though...)
I_Am_Second- i once hired Dan Heisman as a coach for a short time, but his lessons were just too hi at 85 dollars an hour. he truly is a GREAT COACH if you can afford him. any way.... those first 3 or 4 books came off his recommended book list for tactic books to study. the other books were ones that i research. check them out by looking on amazon.com.
i have the Fred Reinfied book, 1001 brilliant bla bla. it has a 2 move tactic followed by a 22 move tactic , lol. too advanced. And i also have Ray Cheng's book, but it have positional tactics along with material tactics. i went through about 7 master game books, so guys i have some posional knowledge. But Dan Heisman said i didnt need to read all those positional books that just wastes time. he always said that small plans would do. things like time management, basic logic, keeping peices active, and making safe moves would make me better than reading 100 books. chess knowledge is not the same as chess strength. if i was then whoever reads the most would be the best.

Dan is excellent at what he does. That is why he can charge what he does, and he is worth it. Bryan Smith here on chess.com is someone that is very good at coaching.
o yeah, Tim Brennan at Tactics Time also is a big fan of tactics only study plan. he became 1800+ uscf player with no coach or positional skills. i'm not looking for a coach, just help on tactic books. And thanks everyone for your books. i'm looking them up to review them. Dan Heiman book called "The improving Chess Thinker" has to be one of the best books for any player under Master level.
