The further the difference the greater the amount of points.
3000 wins against a 500. The 3000 gains perhaps 0 - 1pt. 500 loses 0 - 1 pt.
3000 loses to 500. The 3000 loses 150ps? and the 500 gains 150pts? The reasoning of this is to better reflect a players true playing strength. If a 3000 vs 1200 played 100 games at 10pts win/lose then the 1200 would drop to 100 pt. rating. Same thing, but now since the 1200 through no fault of his own (simply out classed) only loses 1pt. his rating is now 1100. Clearly a more realistic idea of his playing strength.
