What value do you consider a king at?

I consider it infinite, but some people say it’s zero or it doesn’t have a value. What do you think?

I imagine the king as 4.

Of course the real value is the game though.

Yeah, if it was non-value that would be estimable.

Carjbee
It’s value is the game how ever you value this game is the value of the king
mjtcan

in the endgame, it's worth around 4 because it's invaluable in helping passed pawns promote. Besides the endgame, it's worth around 0 because you should never be using it.

I like Carjbee's take on this the king is the value you put on it if u want to play carelessly and not protect it it shows u think of it as low value if u protect it clearly u see it with high value

GoneGone47
A king has no assigned value cause it is the most important piece. If it’s taken it’s game over.

According to chess.com, it’s zero. Go to analysis and load position, then take the king.

Hold up, “endgame” and “invaluable helping passed pawns” and “king” don’t exactly go together.

SAOCM

Like here for example.

In the endgame the king is a strong piece. I'd say slightly stronger than a minor piece, definitely weaker than a rook.

Rakshan-Nandakumar

It is 0 or infinity

For the engines and for positional evaluation otb, it has no “points value” that being said I read in an endgame book long ago that in the beginning of the game, the king is less useful than a pawn. As you get into the endgame, it’s value increases. Once you get to a king and pawn endgame it’s “value” is equivalent to a minor piece, depending on its position on the board (a king in the center will be worth more than a king in the corner). All that being said, the “value” of pieces is purely positional. For example if you watch commentators, they will often discuss how white or black is a pawn or even 2 pawns down but they have great “compensation” due to the activity of the position. You will see this with engine review as well, the valuation bar only somewhat follows piece values on the board, it’s all based on the position and who is more likely to deliver checkmate.
