unfortunately the number of ways to do something wrong always exceeds the number of ways to do it right
What was the best advice given to you in chess

I am about to sum up all of my findings about chess in my life time. I have worked long and hard at chess I what I found may change the entire nature of the game. All of this can be summed of in two immensly powerful words...
DONT LOSE
the best advise ever...
Learn endings.
Who gave you that one ?
My old "coach"/mentor (unpaid), who at 75 is still a formidable player and can swindle you in a simple-looking ending after staying up half the night and drinking two bottles of wine.
anyone can swindle me in anything ;)
but seriously some say a bit alcohol even improves imagination, but probably thats just a nice excuse to get a drink.
From IM Jeremy Silman's The Complete Book of Chess Strategy:
"Pay attention to the game and get to the heart of the matter as quickly as you can.
After your opponent moves, always ask yourself, "Why did he play this?"
Once you figure this out, don't react and forget about your goals! Try hard to create some plan that improves the position of all your pieces. Take time to accomplish these goals, but don't expect perfection. Ultimately you must ask yourself, "What wonderful thing does this move do for my position?" If you can't answer this question, then you must look for something else to do."

Why are you studying master games is your next opponent a master ? My chess coach
I just have to ask: what kind of games does your coach recommend for study?
i think he wos being sarcastical dats liek da worse advize u cud get

Best advice was..develop...move to control the middle, don't move pieces twice in openings and don't make meaningless checks (I was a pro at that for my first 3 yrs of chess). :)
Besides all that, to take up another hobby IF my goal was to be really good. :)
Play chess in your best condition...fresh body and fresh mind (don't play when you tired or being stress )
yeah if i follow that advise i can never play chess again
