What was the best advice given to you in chess

- In the opening, move the same piece as many times as possible, this will confuse the opponent by hiding your plan from him.

- Don't castle until about the move 60. Castling is much more effective late in the game.

- Don't centralize your pieces, move them to the corners, specially the knights, this will create lots of sneaky attack opportunities by the flanks.

- The first piece you want to bring into the game is the queen. Bring it so that she threatens an early mate. You might want to study the games of GM Napoleon Bonaparte, the greatest player ever.

- Place your rooks on closed files, so that it remains safe. Rooks on open files obviously are more vulnerable to rooks and queens that might be on that same file.

- Place your pawns in the same color square of your bishop, preferrably blocking it. This will bring safety to the bishops which is very important specially in the endgame when it can be threatened by the kings.

- Play as fast as you can. The more time you think about a move, the more confusing it will be for your mind. Rely on intuition, trust the Force, let go.

- Don't calculate the moves. It will blurr your intuition and produce bad moves. The best move is the first that comes to your mind, just play it.

- Study the games of great players like for example the Backyard Professor.

- Don't study databases, make up your own moves. Chess is about creativity.

- Tactic puzzles are useless. They will create the habit of calculating the moves, which will confuse your intuition. Don't do any puzzles.

- The best way to improve is by playing blitz. The ideal are 1 minute games, they will be very effective to exercize your brain to think faster and better every time.

- Well hope these advices help your journey to become GM. Good luck!

So far, the best advice given to me was "just play, man". I know I improve every time I play OTB against someone better than me.

When I have castled after move 25, my opponent has resigned within five moves in perhaps 90% of the games. I'll need to do some research to see whether I have pushed off castling until move 60. I rather suspect that immediate resignation will prove to be the result more often than not, and that my score must be close to 100%.

No need to change your game! Change your music

Not if checkers players listen to rap, then I'm all set.

If you want to know the material balance, count the pieces on the board.

Advice stems from observing players lining up captured pieces beside the board. I usually hide a captured pawn behind the clock.

Rap is never the answer...furthermore, I caught Eminem on SNL last night, the guy never smiles.

If you're going to play chess, then take this opportunity to play chess, cultivate your skills and become epic.

The best advice if not the greatest advice given to me in chess was given by no other than GM Joey in the "can we compare chess.com rating with that of fide" post.

Try to intimidate the opponent, be very arrogant, slam the clock and the pieces on the board when you move them. When you capture a piece, knock it literally to the ground, or take it and throw it far away, so that your opponent understands who he is dealing with. If done right, it will frighten the opponent and he will eventually blunder and you will win the game.
