My opponent has a King & rook-pawn while I have a King and a knight, so technically both sides have a chance to win. And my opponent flags, what will happen?

If it were a draw,it would end the game.sinde the game did not end, nothing will happen if he flags

you will win if he flags cause there is a checkmate possible for you

Not here. It would be a draw in the OP case if the side with the pawn times out.

Under FIDE regulations you are correct.

Well, I am studying endgames from Silman's course and so like its obvious you have a win as checkmate is possible.

What ??? YOU SAY THAT YOU CUT 0.1 SEC INCREMENT SO TO GIVE PLAYERS A REAL LIFE EXPERIENCE, and now you are saying that you will take it as a draw which is not at all fair.

I mean I am going to get checkmated, I know and so I just stall and get a draw?? WHAT? Seriously?

Chess.com is Supposed to follow the FIDE rules, as no unfair result comes when those rules are applied.

Nop, the other site considers it as a win for the knight.

Of Course! you will win as the mating pattern could be White- Ka8 , a7

                                                                                          Black- Kc8 and Nb6 mate

so as you have knight and king and opponent have king and rookpawn and he gets flag u won!

as it got draw as some settings in different sites are different.

I hope this cleared your doubt!

Well, we all know that and its not a DOUBT, the problem is WHY IS IT SO?

Chess.com doesn't have to follow FIDE rules. The games are not FIDE rated. The site most closely adheres the US Chess rules, but there are slight differences.

Correct.

Under FIDE, mate just has to be possible by any series of legal moves.

Well , US is a National Federation and FIDE is international, how can national rules be applied?

Chess.com is a website and not bound to follow either for specific cases like that. Some of it comes down to ease of implementation. In this case, it's easier to just look at material the side with time has than come up with an algorithm to determine if mate is possible by any series of legal moves. There was a long discussion about this particular rule five or six years ago, and it is possible to adhere closer to FIDE but there are still some edge cases where it probably won't be accurate.

Add to that, the US Chess rule makes more sense. The FIDE rule allows an Arbiter to make a ruling without any judgement call or ability as a player. The US Chess rule does not give credence that the player with no time would make the worst possible moves to get mated, which is more logical.

i think you are getting it wrong, the side with a rook and a pawn ran out of time and not the side with the king and knight. I dont know what chess.com follows but in a real FIDE tournament it is a win for king and knight
