What would you do if this happened to you during a game?

So I was in a rather important tournament, it was the 5th and final round in the U2100 section and I needed a win to get a cash prize. I'm playing a kid who had to be around 7 or 8 and he's playing with his water bottle the whole game. Finally, without about 25 minutes on both of our clocks, the top comes off of the bottle and water spills all over the board! So what would you do?

It was my turn, but I paused the clock and told him ne needed to go get paper towels and clean it up. As he went to the bathroom to get towels I made my move and pressed his clock. The whole ordeal probably cost him 10 minutes. What would a TD have done if they knew that happened?

Give you first prize.

I would have run to the nearest t-shirt shop and had a "Winner At Chess And Life" shirt made up special for you.

I believe you handled it correctly.

Woe unto any kid who gets between you and money! Cool

You were probably in violation of the rules.  According to 5I, a player who wishes to make a claim or see a director for any legitimate reason may stop both sides of the clock.    You did not make a claim or see a director.  Therefore, you did not have a valid reason for stopping the clock.  Had your opponent been older and wiser, he could have had you penalized for a rules violation.  Had you called the TD (as you should have done), you would not have been allowed to restart the clock until the mess was cleaned up.

Gotta ask, where were the TDs anyway? A kid spills water over a chess board in a game that matters, and there's no TD there within a few seconds? Something was wrong there.
