My point stands: virtually every activity is stratified by ability. It's not much fun for beginners to play experts - and even less fun for experts to play beginners - UNLESS the playing field has been levelled.

Good point.  I've always wanted some kind of handicap system here.  Like the strong player starting without a piece.  Perhaps a site feature suggestion?  Unrated, handicapped games?  In both Live and Online games would be a nice option.  People do it OTB all the time.  :)

Karl this time I have to disagree with you!!!  To date you have won what 10 games in a row against me and I have enjoyed all.  Each has helped me get better.  The idea of a handicap makes me ill.   If you are gonna compete than compete!!  And stop pussifing everything.

The point you are missing is that it may not be enjoyable for the stronger player. There is no real risk for them; nothing is at stake; the outcome is inevitable.

If they gave you a head start (of a minor piece, say), they would then face the very real prospect of losing to you but ... (and I agree with you on this point), it would not count as a game of chess.

True enough on part of stronger player.  Assuming he plays at equal strength.  As a coaching tool it may be of use.  But again they can play unrated.  And if it doesnt count why give up the piece to coach??  I just can't get on board with handicaps
