what year did you start playing chess and how old were you?

I heard somewhere that you cant be a grandmaster unless you've started playing chess when you were 6 years old which sounds ridiculous to me, but i'm wondering about other's experience. my purpose for this thread is to see if age REALLY matters THAT much.

I got gifted a chess set when I was 5 by my grandparents. It was the one my parents had bought for my uncle, my mother’s brother. He died in a building accident.
