What's better for new learners? Blitz, Bullet, Or Rapid?!

I suggest rapid. I'm not saying Blitz or Bullet are bad, but my rating jumped when I played 30 min games. Blitz isn't bad in learning, but I suggest 10 min games for newcomers. As you gradually get better, go ahead to 5 min games and 3 min games. Now bullet. Sigh

Almost all the newcomers play bullet! Bullet isn't bad, just that your not at the level where you actually think in it. You want to move quick as you can with auto click or do random checks, sack your pieces for no reason with no thought. Now I said rapid as in earlier in this short thing because it allows you to really think. It actually lets you do calculation. Would you rather have 48 second on the clock up a queen , or 50 seconds on the clock down a queen? You see, most people would choose option one!  Anyway :

I see no problem with new players starting out with blitz or bullet. They are making random moves anyway. The fast action is probably fun when you don't know what is going on. After they get mated a few times, they might find someone they can beat.

yeah the important thing is to just play. but no doubt it is better to play rapid.

I agree with the above.

Beginners know nothing and the best way to keep it that way is blitz and bullet. If they have a drop of talent they might improve and soon they will hit a wall and stay there forever. Online sites are full with that type of players.

Why be better? Why not be one of them? No one likes wiseguys that try to improve and play good chess.

GM RR Laxman spends most of his days playing blitz but he is a GM. He probably does other work too but a coach at my local chess club said in response to my question about blitz that 'Look at RR Laxman. He became a GM just by playing blitz.' Not saying this will work for everyone though but just saying it can be done.

I think this is true, but I have also seen users with thousands of rapid games and around 800 elo, so some people will hit a wall no matter what, probably due to bad genetics and starting late into adulthood, which can't be fixed with the current technology...

I had received mixed advice about this. Many trainers advocate playing long controls or even claim that blitz (not to mention bullet) is harmful to your play, but I also had a GM telling me to play a lot more bullet (I don't really like bullet, partially because of the fact I play on laptop with touchpad).

I also know a guy who played more than 100 000 bullet games in his life, maybe 200 000 and he is 2300 fide.

I can't tell which point of view is true.

why did he tell you to play bullet? did he say how it will help?

I was going to suggest "none of the above".  Faster play types can be fun, but you play slow games, analyze, and develop pattern recognition at a slow pace of play, and then when it becomes like second nature to you, it'll make you formidable at blitz or bullet.  Beginners need to learn to play well, then they can learn to play fast.

He became GM just by playing blitz? Really?

I play 5 minute blitz games.  Bullet is an abomination.  How many bad chess decisions can I make in 60 seconds?  MORE THAN YOU CAN!
