He was smart. Probably something above average in general intelligence. His teachers found him quite capable, as Frank Brady explained in his biographies. But they also found his single-minded devotion to chess made it difficult for him to develop his intellectual capabilities. 

He had a terrific memory. His chess calculation abilities were exceptional. His chess vision and creativity superb. His chess games are well-worth the time of any and every chess player who aims to improve their game.

Away from the chessboard, however, he had severe problems. Psychological. Mental. Organizational. He was conned by cult leaders, losing much of his income to their scam. He put property in he hands of those not competent to manage it. He was prone to conspiracies.

Fischer is a fascinating and tragic figure. But, claims that he had an IQ higher than any standard aptitude test can reliably measure is not something that you should believe. Seek credible evidence.

Fischer was brilliant and his cognitive ability was tremendous. But that does not make up for his lack of empathy for the human race.
