Curse you, I've been listening to this song all day and it's now stuck in my head! Just goes to show no matter how bad the content songs can still be catchy.
Sorry

I was thinking about my next move for one of my current CC games when I came across the video. Some good tactical variation that I thought up before suddenly vanished after watching the video. I tried hard remembering what I was thinking before, but nothing came up. So I just made another move instead.
Now after coming across this thread once again, I suddenly remember what that variation was. Darn! I think I missed a really good tactical shot that leads to either material gain or mate. Darn it! Darn it! Darn it!
Okay, then no lame questions please.
Let's see: "What's the difference between a Strong Amateur Versus a GM?" Gee, I don't know...how about that the GM is way freakin' better? Does that do the trick? Was that the hidden leap of genius required to suddenly derive sense from chaos?
If you don't know the difference between a strong amateur and a GM,
I will not let you search for Bobby Fischer - in fact that was the problem
with that movie!!
this. Especially more pronounced in even or grindy positions. They will always find the best move, or if it's not, it's a very good confusing move that will take you a while to think to navigate through. The very strong amateur would be able to occasionally find the moves, but they'll lack the gm consistency to follow up just as strong.
Max Euwe wrote a book called Chess Master vs Chess Amateur, where he noted some characteristic differences.
He remarked that a strong amateur can be quite a tricky opponent for the GM, one they might even only be able to draw against, because the amateur may know his openings well and have an OK understanding of the middlegame, so the GM has to rely on achieving slight plusses. Fundamentally, though, the GM has a better understanding of the game and is also stronger tactically.
