What's the most unusual checkmate you've ever seen?

I haven't seen it, but I can think of two iairly rare and odd mates.

1. A mate resulting from castling. Queen's side would be rarer.

2.  A mate resulting from a Knighting. i.e. A pawn is Queened, but a Knight is choosen instead.

Why would Gary Kasparov humiliate himself by playing you? Poor guy...

I can't discuss it on a "family-friendly" site.

I once had a game where my opponent checked me and I blocked the check with a discovered checkmate.

Heh, just like in the movies, "check" answered with "checkmate"

Classic! The board has to be set up backwards, the knight has to move like a rook, and the person who says, "Check", has to be completely suprised by "Checkmate!" from the opponent. Only in the moviesLaughing

I get really frustrated when chess is horribly represented on television or in movies. I think sitcoms are the worst.

Three castling mates can be found in this thread: Help me find this epic checkmate! One king-side, two queen-side.

Knighting mates are more frequent:

Very nice -- especially the one with the king mated on c3... looks crazy.

A dream come true.  Could you repay that for us?

Maybe it's not too unusual, but I didn't ever see this again before or after: This was at the simul vs. that nice young local WFM I once mentioned :)

Here's a puzzle:

White to move and NOT mate in 1- (mate in 2s only) (no mate in 3s)

I had a checkmate with a pawn which didn't promote, a knight, and a king but I don't remember the proof
