Whats the point of castling??

Hello, I am new to chess and I just got a USCF but sadly I'm rated 54. I was wondering what is the point of castling in this game. All it does is undevelop your king and put it in the corner where it can't move and is blocked by its own pawns. Isn't the king supposed to be the best piece and in the middle of the fight?
