What's the rhyme & reason behind the tactics timer?

I'm wondering about how much time is allowed for exact tactic? How is it determined? I was recently allowed 15 minutes for an easy tactic????

The full timer bar is 2x the average time.

Half the bar is the same as the average time. So, to score 50%, you need to take the average time on a problem with the same rating as you and get it completely correct. Or get half the moves correct but quick enough for a 100% rating. I'm not sure exactly the time needed to score 100%.

If you go over double the average time you will score a maximum of 20%.

Thanks for the answers.... I've wondered for a while. I'm guessing the puzzle I was given 15 minutes to solve must be new?

This isn't true. This will score you 80%. Also, I thought that the timer was double the average time of the correct attempts to solve the puzzle. At least, that is what I assumed because of the insanely high time many of the 5-10% correct answer puzzles have.

Ah yes, you're correct.

And yes, it's correct attempts.

You can change the settings so that it shows you the timer at the bottom of the screen during the puzzle.
