When a kid supposedly beats you....

Anyone else here just get all miffed when a youngster schools them at chess?  Either here, where you can at least wonder if the other end of the line is lying for some twisted reason.  But.  Baring monsters amongst us, I tend to believe it when a kid tells me they are 8 or 11.  In both cases I nearly lost to them both (I'm rated 1050ish and tehy were similar). Anyway,  it just really tans my hide when I get beaten or nearly beaten by a kid. I had to cowardly accept a draw offered by repetition.  It was a draw by rep. then, he just moved to the next repetition and then I claimed the draw.

There's just something disturbing about being beaten by a child. I know how Kasparov felt when he played Carlsen.

if you are paying online,  they most likely have a second computer set up with a program,   its easy to do.   I often wondered how I can be a 30 year chess player and be beaten here so much.  I do not lose to people ever.  If you think you are across from a "second screen"   run ur plan bckwards, the seemingly random moves will throw off the program they are mimicing.  good luck out there.

Just becuse they are a kid does not mean they are cheating...I'm 14 and im 100 points above you, am i a cheater?

" I often wondered how I can be a 30 year chess player and be beaten here so much."

Have you ever heard of the learning curve, or the plateau?

People can play golf for ~40 yrs and still completely suck at it, so stop talking.

Ishrak

Yeah.. I am 13,and do you think I woll cheat?

AWSmith61

Oh, I checked.  They didn't cheat.  They rarely made a move ranked in the top 5 or 6 by Stockfish.

No shame at all in losing to the kids.  Its just a strange experience I bet.  I know it'll happen to me when I get to go to my 1st tournament.  8)  I am sooooooo looking forward to that level of OTB play.  That and I'm looking forward to going back to New Orleans and playing the chess sharks hanging out in Jackson Square's shade. Muaaaah!

I saw a picture of Pogonina (?) I think as a young girl and someone asked if it was her.  She confirmed it was and that she remembered playing chess for some $$ in a park in Russia.  I deeply admire how the Russians took (take?) chess as a national pride issue.

Dear God, I miss living in New Orleans. 8) Its just not going to happen in this lifetime.

I have beaten a couple of the young gms in the us on icc when they were much younger, but now I stand no chance against them. Losing to young player does not bother me at all.

I always feel good when I lose a good game vs kid. It means I had him thnking, which improved his chess even more!

When I get humiliated tho..

thechessplaya5

Kasparov felt the same when I beat him. Oh, that poor devil!

Our State Champion is 14 years old.  And recently I played the deciding game in my tournament section against an 8-year-old and barely managed to swindle him for the draw (luckily that's all I needed).  He's now rated over 2000 and will probably kick my butt next time.  (I can at least hope he'll be 9 by then....)

Learn to enjoy the kids' accomplishments.  Their energy and enthusiasm brings a lot to the sport.  And perhaps some advice or insight you can offer them will get used in a Championship match someday, which is as close as most of us will get to that level....

I'd rather have a kid beat me on the chessboard, than have the kid mug me in a back alley as a lost teenager or young adult.

There are far worse things in life that can happen...

TheBlunderfulPlayer

What's so shameful about losing to a kid?

Sir_KingKillerRabbit

Then whats about been beaten by a bunny like me?

Absolutely.

Chess skill is just that. Age has little to do with it. It is one thing if you get upset at getting beaten by a better player, it is quite another if you do because of age.

He went on to be the national champion for his age group. As to games on here, they don't mean much as the real test of chess ability lies in OTB games.

Well said!

Disclaimer: I worked (volunteered...) for 3 years as a comissioner for a U6 soccer league and saw ~1% of my kids go from zero talent to clumsy to stellar.  That 1% was INCREDIBLE on the pitch after they trained up a bit.  So I tend to really really sit mouth on the floor in amazement when kids do well.

What's beautiful is when these kids pull off these wins against grown ups.

I deeply admire their talent.  Its really really wonderful to live in an age when we can track and follow this sort of talent across the planet too.

I do get miffed, but I take my losses in stride.  You can't really 'cheat' or win unfairly except by computer and well... my own checking really hasn't caught a single cheater yet.  Even in those critical positions when I am totally stumped on the right counter or the right move for either side Stockfish diligently informs me how poor a player we both are for missing like 2-3 decent strategicish (its a word) lines.

I actually love it when they show their skills.  Its why Pogonina (?) was playing chess in parks at young age (note to Miss Pogonina: I am writing that from memory....  I believe you confirmed you were the girl in a photo on your blog ages ago).  Anyway, hats off to these kids.

I was surprised when Carlsen drew against Kasparov when Carlsen was 13 and Kasparov just up and left the table shaking his head.  I'd have at least shook hands and talked about the game for a few minutes.

My daughter (9) has started playing here.  She got a dose of 'winning' when she checkmated (finally) her brother.  She caught the bug hopefully and will start playing more here.  I told her to try about 10 or so games and let me know when she wins one so I can see it. 8)

I have been hopelessly addicted to this game since taking it back up more seriously a few months ago.  My kids want to learn it (because Dad's doing it).  Hopefully they'll find the same enjoyment I have.

Anyway, since I'm a dad I get really interested when I play a young person.  If you can count 17 as young I played one of those too recently but it was a win only because he chose to leave the board a bit prematurely (IMO).

I am looking forward to the day when OTB I get beat by a U18 player. 8)

Soryr to double post -- anyone seen these wonderkids before they b.ecame wonderkids?  For instance, how good was Carlsen at age 5? Any games to view from wonderkids on the net?

Let me See if I understand, are you angry because a kid kick your ass. It gives me Shame this one of a kind people, who think kids do not have skill. I'm a 13 year old and It gives me Shame your way of thinking. ESPERO QUE CONSIGAS ALGO DE CULTURA, POR EL BIEN DE U.S.A.

In defeat, show children the grace an adult should have. That is much more valuable to see than any Grandmaster game.
