>>>promotes a pawn into a pawn and checkmates the other guy with this pawn...
Even if it were legal, how would that even be possible???
Must be a hoax.
I think people are focusing on the wrong thing.
its not that the guy played VERY dodgy chess. its that he was a violent guy.
pity the guy that plays him.
all I can say is if someone violently insists he can promote a pawn into a pawn- that its pretty stuck... pawns can't move backwards.

Seeing the end of his reign coming, the black king had already fled the board with all the gold he could and got murdered abroad by the rebelious fxg1=P pawn.
Notice it's also a summary of every single African dictatorship these past 40 years.

You are assuming the report is true. I do not believe the story unless the OP can point me to the source of the report.
With that said, people are emotional beings and one can not know who will act out violently when provoked. It's certainly an ugly fact of human nature. Violence is a criminal act but I see no reason to single out Chess as connected to the event. Any activity could produce such reactions.
Quite simply, one should not be surprised by a violent response when one goes out of their way to intentionally provoke the assault.
true enough.for the record I believe Little of what is said here, without proof.
but you have to admit, it isn't SO unlikely that someone get Very mad perhaps violent when he loses. harder is the pawn promoting to a pawn. that might actually just be a typo.
Idk. in the wide world of people- I am sure there are some that I would NOT like to play chess with. the whole game for money is problematic IMHO
its bad enough when just ego is on the line.
BTW, it is said that in many big cities there are hustlers that play chess for cash- does anyone know whether such guys are Honest when they are beat?
: curious
There are plenty of egomaniacs and sore losers at every level in chess, it's not a surprise when you have played in a chessclub for a while.
Fairplay and respect, what for?

Most hustlers are probably really strong players, but cheating is possible too.
I once read a story (I don't recall where) that one husler played in a park near a tall apartment building where he had an accomplice with a computer and binoculars who could see the moves being played. The accomplice would feed computer advice by way of an ear piece he was wearing.
That has been known to happen in tournaments too, but generally the tournament conditions have a better controlled environment and implement specific rules to prevent cheating. i.e. no cell phones etc.

Am I the only one who's interpreting the story as: someone promoted a pawn to another piece (most likely a queen), but did not change the physical pawn on the board for the piece that it was promoted to, and checkmated his opponent with that piece? That was my immediate instinct when I read the story, probably in part because I once read about something similar happening in a Kasparov vs. Karpov game.
Once I was walking trough a chess hall and someone threw at me a bishop, I fell to the ground bleeding, some people came at my rescue, they gave me a cupcake in form of a pawn, when I found out who tried to stab a bishop in my head it turned out it was a guy I had mated the last round.
Look when you are in a time scrabble sometimes you dont have enough time to exchange a pawn for a queen when promoting. By fide rules you cant promote to a pawn, that is an illegal move but chess players promote to a pawn and shout queen which is illegal better take a rook and turn it on its head upside down.
If you really been playing chess for a long time by now you know chess is not all innocent sometimes it turns violent especially when playing for cash or just honour. Couple of weeks was at the chess club and saw something strange, this two guys are playing blitz for small cash, the guy that was loosing starts pointing the piece the guy that is winning is supposed to move, the guy that's winning even though his getting help from his opponent he shouts and say don't point at my pieces and they get into a terrible fight. Another day one guy promotes a pawn into a pawn and checkmates the other guy with this pawn and a heated argument erupted. I read online Vassily Ivanchuk shows up on chess tournaments wearing a mask maybe he does not want his opponents to read his facial expression. Please share the drama you observed at your club.
