when did chess become a game of bad sportsmanship.

As long as chess has been on the internet it has been like this and it ALWAYS will be. This is the internet my friend. IT will ALWAYS bring the worse out of people.

Anonymity and physical separation distances people from the repercussions of their actions, so you get to see what they're like a few layers deeper.

Yes indeed. I try and hold myself to the standard of would I say so and so if my opponent was in front of me. I won't type in on chat what I wouldn't be prepared to say up front to someone.
By and large, I find the vast majority of players conduct themselves very well. If you go to youtube, even on recipes for cooking rice, people are prepared to be offensive. Amusing and sad at the same time.

Just curious...Where do you find a place where it will ALWAYS bring out the best in people?

TV debates!

Youtube is brutal. I avoid commenting at all there. I like a suggestion Randall Munroe of xkcd made:
Narcsisim is worse in people and egos are far bigger than use to be.
Today's cheaters have nerve and bigger stones than cheaters from the 1990's they're even willing to do it to top 5-6 Fide players in the world I heard somewhere they even tried to cheat against Garry Kasparov and he caught them.
When it happened to an elite player on another site awhile back I couldn't believe it I said to myself does he realize who he just tried to screw?
Sad man.

I think that's why many players who reach some higher levels of skill are trying to hang out with other stronger players and they do not go to the park to play chess with hustlers.
Even in stricter conditions of a tournament and imposition of rules bad sportsmanship could have been seen. Back when smoking was allowed during play the players tried to irritate their opponent by blowing smoke around them. Others would rudely tap their foot or make some other irritating behavior be seen knowing it would irritate the other. I actually read how when Korchnoi was playing Tigran Petrosian, the latter would constantly tap or shake his foot. Korchnoi was understandably irritated and complained. Petrosian seems to have ignored the warning. Anyways, they hated each other.
Also from USSR, I am sure everyone has read their rigging of games when they played as a teams. That is the definition of bad sportsmanship.
Junior chess champion Carissa Ip also has shown bad sportsmanship actually. There is a video where Jennifer Shahade is the moderator of a friendly game between Carissa Ip and another girl. Their pieces are arranged perfectly fine. Then Carissa reaches out and starts "adjusting" then pieces of her opponent even before a first move has been made. She literally touched almost every piece of her opponent. It was such a transparent passive and intentional intimidation tactic I am still feeling anger just thinking about it. It is basically an invasion of the opponents private space. It would unnerve anybody.
That said, it's not as bad as bad sportsmanship in Poker. In my experience there players are just making their goal to think how to irritate or how to be rude to others.

i'm done answering each topic on sportsmanship - so here:

They are materialists who believe mental states are nothing more than physical brain processes, so what substance are you hoping to find where their soul should be, digitally reincarnated mother theresas at your beck and call? You'll only set yourself up for disappointment.

@op before the Internet was the chess clock. I think you can guess why that invention was needed. Bad manners is part of the human condition, not the game itself. I might add, internet anonymity wasn't the issue back then. It was very intentional.
Probably long before Ruy Lopez wrote that you should see to it that your opponent sat so he was blinded by the sun while playing.

I find it interesting that You think Carissa yip adjusting peices is
"intimidating"
this is wierd even for chess.com. I can only thing that you sit gloomily guarding your peices barking at the Opponent "Don't Touch my peices"...
how do you Even play chess like that?
do you tell you opponent that You will remove peices from the board?? its positively territorial.
OTOH,if your chillax, you should not get upset by a little girl playing chess. as you said yourself, there was a arbiter present...
