When is it rude to not resign? (chess etiquette)

The only rude way to not resign, is to let the clock run just to piss off the winning opponent.

Basically you can keep playing as long as you're taking the game seriously. You either seriously think you might not lose, or you're seriously trying to learn something.

If you're a beginner, and you play until checkmate, then no one will care because it's easy to believe
1) You're unsure when it's hopeless
2) Even if you know it's hopeless you're trying to learn something by watching the finish

As you get better, there are fewer positions where your opponent can believe you're still taking the game seriously.

BTW I tend to resign pretty late in OTB games. It has to be super-super-super hopeless tongue.png ... don't ever resign because you think it's polite. Resign when you can't take the game seriously anymore.

Block rude people and move on. The more we block them the more they will go away, hopefully. If you feel you have winning chances move on. If I am playing people at my rating 1800-1900 and they have a two pawn deficit in the endgame and they keep playing I'm blocking them and moving on. That's my advice.

No, it's not rude to not resign. If you think you have a chance at a draw (or even a win), I would suggest against it.

I would say it's ruder on his part to say you're rude for not resigning.

I was playing a game (10 min.) I had my king, and my opponent had his bishop and castle. He blundered and I took his bishop. I offered a draw. He declined. He said I was being rude and weird for not resigning, but he didn't know how to get checkmate in that situation. I'm new(ish) to chess. I resigned because I didn't want to be a jerk, but I could have gotten a draw like I wanted. So, is it rude to not resign in that situation or one like it? Thanks.

There are a lot of morons on here that will trick you like that. Just don't pay attention, and whatever you do, don't resign.

Grim_reaper 16 i think he resigned cuz he felt disrespected by you promoting to rooks instead of queens and didnt want to get humiliated even more.

He abandoned the game which is even more disrespectful

I wouldn't say in that scenario that what he did was any more disrespectful than what you did. It's possible he wouldn't have ever done that if it wasn't for you trolling.

That's true, but just because someone's having a bad day or week doesn't mean they should take it out on their opponent.

However, there is more of a reason to abandon if their opponent was doing something like what @Grim_Reaper_16 was doing.
