When will it end?

I've been playing chess now for just over a year and while I understand that beginners love to use their queen (sometimes effectively) early, at what level will the attempts at a scholar mate end?  I'm playing people in the 1200's and I want to practice 'real' openings, not easily defend a scholars mate. Here is a game of a reverse scholars mate I guess.  I had never seen it as a black defence but it didn't seem too effective.  This player was rated in the low 1200's and had won the majority of his games against players of my rating.

So while I love an easy win, I also want to improve against people around my same rating.  When did you stop using your queen early (if you did as a beginner?)

You could play higher rated opponents? I don't play on chess.com much. When I was playing regularly on FICS, I found that losing to higher rated players can be a good learning experience.

Losing to lower rated players can also be a learning experience. haha!

I'm just wondering when the higher rated opponents might stop using this type of opening.  I still lose regularly against players in my rating range when they use a normal type of opening so I'm not ready for a higher level yet.

What's a normal type of opening? I think there are approximately a bazillion openings and opening variations, but the ideas of controlling the center and opening lines of attack and creating multiple threats while keeping an eye on defense and the safety/mobility of your own pieces are kind of always present. I dunno though. My interest in chess comes and goes and I can't seem to stick with it long enough to get past what ails my game.

Any opening that doesn't bring out the queen in the first 2-3 moves looking for tricks/traps/checkmates would be normal for me I guess.  I just don't like having to defend against a scholars mate still.

An opening is good if it develops your pieces, controls the centre and defends against opponents threats

Not sure, I didn't find this site until I had been playing for awhile.  It depends on the player, but I'd say pretty soon... around 1200 and they really shouldn't be giving you that many free tempos with a queen attack like that.

I stopped using my queen early at around the... no wait- I still use my queen early, but not in the scholar's mate.

KillTheHorsie

Stopped using my Queen early about forty-eleven years ago, when it kept getting captured before the middlegame.

Has it ended yet?

DrSpudnik

I think it ended 15 months ago

cabadenwurt

Well according to the Mayan calendar it should be ending anytime now  lol.

AndyClifton

I thought it ended last year.

Conflagration_Planet

True. It was predicted by them 15 months ago.

If they're so smart, how come they're not still around?

cabadenwurt

Well we have to give them some leeway tho. No high-tech Computers at that time, now where is my darn Slide-rule at ?

Good point, but they might be asking the same about us in a few hundred years.

True, indeed even my favourite of the Ancient Empires ( ie the Roman one ) came to an end, changes do occur over time.

Conflagration_Planet

They all probably thought their civilization would never end.
