When you HATE Chess

Sort:

There are times when I really hate chess. This isn't just a dislike where I don't want to play or study but a strong heartfelt hatred where I feel every moment of life spent on chess was wasted. I don't get this with other games. for example I play poker and have had some bad losses but it doesn't make me hate it. After a loss in poker I just feel slightly sick and shocked. but there is something about chess that at times strongly triggers my emotions. it is true that I can feel that way and then the next day be playing and enjoying again. but at times I seriously think I never want to play another game ever again. what causes these feelings towards chess and how to manage it? by the way if you are going to say I should just quit, I already thought if that. this isn't about that but more why chess can make you hate it sometimes.

Why do you play chess and how much time do you devote to it?

markkoso

I play for enjoyment and the mental challenge. I spend maybe up to an hour a day

So you feel sometimes that 1 hour daily is not worth all that enjoyment and mental challenge you get from chess? Are there any repeating circumstances when you feel that way?

markkoso

Yes.  Usually playing blitz and getting flagged.  Or missing tactics.  I've not seen any improvement in my blitz play.

To me it looks like you get angry at the game itself when you get frustrated with your little or no progress. And indeed it can be frustrating especially if you are ambitious. To manage it in my opinion you need a good training plan.

I think you are right.  Some structure would be useful.  The thing is I watch banter blitz etc.  That motivates me to play for enjoyment.  But my blitz level does not match my expectations.

Everytime u play, try something new, if u lose figure it why, if u think this new way can evolve, go ahead evolve, u may not become a gm by this way, but u will like chess everyday. make a chess like ur mental lab

You lack appreciation of the beauty of chess. I recommend reading this book.

I bought that book.  It is an excellent work on chess.  A good antidote to being disillusioned by playing too many cheapo meaningless games.

the desire to stop freedom of speech these days should scare people . the gov will not have to take that right away we are handing it over. you gotta be so sound asleep not to realize that a stomping out of freedom of speech is a stomping out of freedom of thought
what this is going to give us is already manifesting and no not one of us will like.
