When your good

What is the milestone one should reach in order to say with confidence "I am good at chess"? There are probably as many answers as there are players, but how about these:

  • When your good friends refuse to play chess with you because you beat them every time
  • After playing in an OTB chess tournament and placing in the top half
  • Solving all the problems in Reinfeld's 1001 Winning Chess Sacrifices and Combinations
  • Being told "you're good" by IM pfren
  • Beating your dad at chess
  • Getting a USCF rating of 1800
  • Knowing what en passant is and using it in games

Your ideas?

It is all relative, of course. To an expert player, I am bad, to a super GM, I might as well not know how the pieces move, to a friend who hasn't played chess, I'm some kind of wizard

Number 4 is impossible to achieve Wink, so I would replace it with "getting an OTB title"

When I learned en passant I felt like a chess magician

Btw, you're*

Oh yeah.

En Passant?  Are you kidding?  I knew that move when I started playing chess, at about 8 years old! happy.png

Just knowing "the moves" doesn't make you a good chess player, it only means you can maybe play a game.

It's funny, because when I was about 1600 rated, I'd have considered myself quite good at chess.  I'm now rated much higher and would hesitate to say I'm decent, let alone good.

The more I learn about chess, the more I realize I know so little.

I learned about en passant when I was 15 (3years ago).

Totally agree

If you're not the reigning world chess champion, you're not good at chess

It's about when you hit 2000-2100 that you start realising how totally crap you are at the game.

And it gets exponentially worse after that.

I can't play for ****.
