I've worked with kids for 25 years.  Worked at a chess camp for 7 years.  Here's the problem (It was popular to deny this in the 70's): Girls are different from boys.  At birth.  Boys like to slam bang and strut.  Girls like to collaborate.  We are talking in general terms here.  I argued long and hard for seperate girls tourneys, to no avail.  Even the GM's don't get it. (you can be brilliant, and not very smart).  We would start chess clubs and classes and in the beginning have a nearly equal mix of girls and boys.  But when the boys started slamming the pieces and trash talking the girls dwindled away.  I understand that in major competitions, there is no descrimination (in principle) but the reality is much different.  I've met a number of GM's.  Most of them are chauvinists.

If you look at the signature. It was signed by Charlotte Benjamin. So by my deduction, the name was a pseudonym. The real person writing that letter was Benjamin Charlotte. It was all a ruse!!!
