Your own country or one that can be reached by cheap flights.
Which country is the cheapest to travel to and play otb tournaments?

Very few opportunities to play OTB in America without being in or just outside a few major cities.
i thought America gave a lot of opportunities for otb

The problem with Europe is that the places are far more interesting than the chess. Who would want to spend three days in Warsaw, Prague, Amsterdam, Vienna, Bern, Rome etc., etc. and spend it sitting in a playing hall ??

There's no answer for that during the Covid season(s). A lot of tournaments have been cancelled, or postponed.

Spain, of course. We depend on the hospitality industry. If this fails, do you think government will invest on I + D? Never! They'll just declare the country on bankruptcy. Will you choose to live with such a guilty conscience?

The most 'chess active' city I have ever been to in Budapest. There are chess shops that sell nothing but chess related products, people playing in public parks and in the street, even a chess thermal pool in the famous Szechenyi Spa where people can sit in the bath and play.

I am thinking 5 years ahead.
This should include lodgings, travel, and the charge per tournament.
