Which country is the cheapest to travel to and play otb tournaments?

This should include lodgings, travel, and the charge per tournament.

Very few opportunities to play OTB in America without being in or just outside a few major cities.

i thought America gave a lot of opportunities for otb

Europe is likely to be your best over all place, but I’m sure you can research better, smaller options too. The US is expensive over all and much more limited than Europe for sure in terms of tournament possibilities.

The problem with Europe is that the places are far more interesting than the chess. Who would want to spend three days in Warsaw, Prague, Amsterdam,  Vienna, Bern, Rome etc., etc. and spend it sitting in a playing hall ??

sad. But I think Serbia is kinda good for this or maybe Georgia.

There's no answer for that during the Covid season(s). A lot of tournaments have been cancelled, or postponed.

Georgia

Spain, of course. We depend on the hospitality industry. If this fails, do you think government will invest on I + D? Never! They'll just declare the country on bankruptcy. Will you choose to live with such a guilty conscience?

The most 'chess active' city I have ever been to in Budapest. There are chess shops that sell nothing but chess related products, people playing in public parks and in the street, even a chess thermal pool in the famous Szechenyi Spa where people can sit in the bath and play.

I am thinking 5 years ahead.

no Asian countries just don't feel right here (no offense)

but sounds good

In 5 years everything could change so the speculation is quite meaningless- just practice your chess and save your funds and then research when you wish to begin that journey. :)

The answer is "your one".

Ukraine is lovely this time of year.  Just bring a flashlight.

But they don't give up.

The cheapest place to go would be Haiti, but that's not advised right now. The most expensive country in the world to visit is Iceland. Or so I've heard.
