The Soviet generation is coming to an end. The top GM's today were trained in the Soviet Union. Now that it is gone, chess in Russia will suffer greatly.

Obviously Russia when comparing the amount of grandmasters and total titled players. It's not really a surprise considering the whole "Soviet Chess School" origins for many players.

If you'd have to make 5 player teams for something like Olympiads, it gets much more even. Russia could get 5 grandmasters with 2750+ rating, USA almost too. China has 6 grandmasters in top 50, India and Ukraine have 3, and then there are countries like Azerbaijan and Armenia who could get a really good, young team of talent. But if we're simply using ratings and numbers, there is no topping Russia. By far the most grandmasters, most titled players and 10 grandmasters in the top 50. It's pretty impressive, considering that Russia has "only" 144 million population. Much less than countries like China, India or even USA.

this is the truth very common truth that people choose to ignore

I think Russia, although perhaps not as much as before. Rivals are indeed East Europe, China and India.

USA has improved and Western Europe has and will do a lot.

But, Russia has a lot of history, especially in the last 100 years of being the "powerhouse".

Taskinen, thank you for putting that link on the table.

Hahahaha, funny but the Americans say the US, I wonder why? Maybe it is because you're so insular. You don't find out about the rest of the World or how great anybody else is. I have a great story for you regarding this, humour me...

I was travelling a while back. I dropped in on the US and spent about 6 months there. Anyway, as you do when travelling, I went out with some other backpackers for a nice meal. I am a white male from the Uk. My dinner dates were an American (white) male, an Irish young lady and an English lady of Indian decent. All was going well when we got onto the religion subject. The American guy made it quite clear that he was a church goer, though I can't remember his religion. Anyway, the Irish girl stated that she was Catholic, I explained that whilst I believe in something it isn't a mainstream religion. Anyhow, when we got to the Indian/English girl, she explained that she believed in Allah and Islam etc. To which the American said "So, you're a terrorist? From a terrorist state?" I couldn't believe what he had said so I explained that she was as English as me, having been born in England which is not a terrorist state. He exclaimed that given her colour and that she followed Islam that she was a terrorist. Needless to say the conversation went downhill and the meal was ruined. He upset this poor girl so much I did offer to flatten him for her but she declined.

Another time on a bus a beautiful young lady sat next to me. Keen to chat, I asked her the usual questions. When we got to what she did for a job she explained that she was a teacher coming to England to teach, of all things, Geography. Thinking the stars must be looking down on me, I asked where in England. To which this 'Geography' teacher said... Wales. When, later that evening, we arrived at a backpackers and she pointed to a French flag hanging up (geography teacher remember), and complained saying that she didn't want to sleep somewhere where they have a Russian flag flying. Needless to say I never saw her again.

I met soooo many people all over the world well educated and able to speak many languages and then I met the Americans. To be fair I did meet one smart American in six months and the irony of it was that he was moving to Germany because he couldn't understand how the leading financial powerhouse was so ill educated. Have a great one X
