These are two different categories. Both have their own benefits.

ya so what are their benefits for a beginner

OTB - obviously less games to play. You need to go outside. So, even from this perspective you may play OTB games in more serious way.

OTB is much better for improvement at all levels

Beginner needs to be taught OTB by patient, emphatic person with some pedagogical experience.

Not really. You learn as you play

Probably 95% of online players are beginners Vs 50% of OTB players being beginners. I think that's evidence enough that OTB is much better for advancing past the beginner stage

Yeah, playing helps, but without someone pointing out patterns, you risk just repeating the same mistakes forever.

I guess online is like cardio and OTB is weightlifting but both needed but in different ways 💀

who else has tried both and felt like online makes you overconfident sometimes

Online for fun and try new stuff you should not try the first time OTB. OTB if you are serious about chess, you get an actual rating for life not some online rating which if you are unhappy about just go to another site and try to get a better one.

definitely online. When you're starting out, you need experience and get used to the game. It's much easier to play online.
