Which is the best opening for black when white played d4?

Avatar of MickinMD

If White plays 1 d4, 1 e4, or 1 c4, I often play 1 c6, where White almost always ends up in a variation of the Slav Defense or Caro-Kann Defense, two of the Black Defenses I'm most comfortable where I know the ideas behind the openings and the kinds of middle games that tend to come from them.

You could also go be more straightforward and play 1 d4 d5 2 c4 c6 to play the Slav - this lets you get your c8-B to f5 or g4 instead of having it trapped behind your pawns in the Queen's Gambit Declined after 2...e6.

Players at the top level usually reply with Nf6.

Now I know you may ask why Nf6 is usually the top response at the top level. Well the reason being is that when White opens with D4, they are making their intentions known that they want to control as much central territory as possible which is why they also play c4. White would eventually like to push their e lawn from e2 to E4 and Nf6 is attacking the E4 square from the start as if it's Black saying slow down their buddy. Dereque Kelley on YouTube made a video on this very thing about what he believes is the strongest reply to 1 D4! Just watch the video is all I'll say. Let's just say Nf6 isn't what he thinks is the strongest reply to 1 d4.

"Best opening" against 1.d4, or any other first move, is any sound opening you are most familiar with.

Nf6, Nimzo-Indian or King's Indian. Both are excellent openings
