I put mine down randomly. I place my opponent’s knights so they look at him, especially when I’m playing my old friend Pat. Old because he’s a month older than me and we’ve known each other since 1977.

so far I've only met "don't care" and "facing forwards" people, but yesterday met an actual master who made me aware that some prefer them facing sideways. Interesting. I guess a takeaway from this discussion is that if you seek to trigger your opponent, good chance you can do that with a backwards-facing knight.
