Who's Murphy?
Who do you think is the best Chess player in recorded history?
#19
"Magnus ... would beat all players in a match"
Magnus could neither beat Karjakin nor Caruana in a match and we will see about Nepo.
Fischer smashed Taimanov, Larsen, Petrosian, Spassky in matches.
Kasparov also dominated Karpov, Anand, Short before succumbing to Kramnik.

Definitely Murphy. Wise far beyond his years, and always able to accurately predict the outcome based on hunch and intuition. Uncanny ability to assess almost any situation. Not exactly an optimist, but always grateful when something finally did go right.
He is often credited for formulating THE single most important principle in chess, as anyone who has ever lost a game of chess will testify.

Anyone in the computer era doesn't qualify (imo).
Neither does anyone who had access to the classical literature or a chess school (like Botvinnik).
So, for me it has to be players from before about 1900. Capablanca being the youngest of those players...Steintiz, Staunton, Morphy, and Lasker should be on the list.
Sensible.
I think the best player for all time is KASPAROV
