I tried to find out who was #1 on here...I found maybe #3 or #4, but which player is #1?

GM Julio Becerra

he's the highest on chess.com.

Avatar of BirdsDaWord

No, he is #17.  If you go to their chess page, underneath their rating you see a ranking.  LucidDream or Gonnosuke are the two highest I found so far.  But I still couldn't find #1?  Maybe it is a conspiracy!  :-)

Thanks a bunch!  The funny thing is, when you go to this page, the player that is top-listed is ranked #2 on the site...kind of weird, but I guess he's the man!

Pelger is the current highest at 2870 on chess.com rating. But GM Julio is the higest rated OTB player on here i believe.

Avatar of BirdsDaWord

Yes, that makes more sense...I guess I should have phrased my question better.  Sorry for the confusion.  I still think it is funny that they have Pelger at #2 - I guess he is just second-best to NOBODY...

I think it's funny that he just had his 100th birthday too.  I hope I'm that sharp at his age.  Smile

That experience comes in handy ha? hahaha good for him. Correspondence chess suits the older players more then the young i believe because they have experience but brain not think as fast as younger players.

Very unusual. In the rankings page the top player is number 2, the second player is number 3, etc.

Who is number one? And why is he/she not on the rankings?

Rybka, of course, is number one :))

No that would be cheating, no computers allowed hahaha. Maybe its the retired Kasparov :)

I know, but they catch cheaters every day. That's why they have the first place reserved for Rybka. Seems fair to me, haha.

Maybe somebody who works on the site gave themself the first spot.

I'm sure the number one is Bobby Fischer. He's not really dead and he plays on this site.

It's funny how Pelger plays all of his games at 14 day time controls so he can put off his losses and draws as long as possible.  He has games that are over 1+ year old and doesn't seem to play many highly rated players.

Of course, GM Becerra is the top player here -- the only true 2600 player who plays here regularly as far as I know.   It looks like Becerra's lost a couple of games to Rybka since he's been here but sadly that's no surprise.

I checked the staff. None of them is number 1.

From looking at the last dozen (blank) pages on the ranking page (URL listed above), I suspect that the way the program ONLY shows players who have at least one loss. If the THE highest player has never lost, they won't show up on the list.

No, the ranking is bugged.  Pelger is truely the No.1 player, and Gonnosuke is No.2.  No idea why it hasn't been fixed yet, but it has been that way for over a year (top-ranked player listed as No.2), when VanCliburn was top-ranked.

Thats just a consequence of being very difficult to always win at the higher levels. Go to the 10th or 20th pages and you'll find players who have yet to lose.

As far as the #1 rated player, players who have their accounts banned still retain their ranks as far as the numbers go: ex) http://www.chess.com/echess/profile/Grey_Game

I remember awhile back there was a player who had just played 5 moves and then his friend resigned and got his rating up to around 2900 if I remember correctly. If after this he had no games going when he got banned he would maintain that rating and be #1. Unfortunately I delete my chess.com emails so the abuse report isn't still in my inbox. I suspect that this person (or something similar) is the result of the #1 spot.
