Wesley So? really? LOL you don't know many great speed players, do you?

So is a fine blitz player. Maybe not upto the level of Naka or the greats of the past. But he's good I suppose.

You clearly need to go look up some more players,

Nakamura can't even be in the contention for the best blitz player simply because he is not even the best in his generation, he has a negative record against many players in blitz including Magnus Carlsen, and he lost a pretty one sided blitz match against Caruana in what people claimed to be his prime.

So who do you consider the greatest blitz player?

To say players of 50+ years ago were 'the best' is also to say there has been zero evolution in chess understanding.

And yet, many openings player 50+ years ago are concluded to be unsound, indicating that there has been an evolution in understanding.

In my opinion, top players of today are far better at openings and endgames than players of 20+ years ago.

Its very difficult (nearly impossible) to pick one player as the best but I think, players up there would be :-

Tal, (amazing blitz player, won the 1988 blitz WC beating players like Kasparov and Karpov in their prime).

Fischer (had ridiculously amazing scores in top level blitz tournaments 21.5/22 and 19/22) etc.

Grischuk (has to be in the list simply because he is three time WC in blitz).

Carlsen ( two time WC in blitz, has the best feel for the game out of all players, so he is always a very strong force in rapid and blitz ).

Capablanca probably havent even heard about blitz!

Anatoly Karpov is the best blitz player in the history of the game. This is so because of his increadible calculating abilities. During his unprecedented 17 years as world champion he was able to calculate long lines till the endgame in a few seconds.

Only in the mid 90s modern computers were able to do what Karpov had been doing for years

Chill Alex, Karpov was champion for 10 years, not sixteen nor seventeen. Next time make sure you make him champion for eighteen years,!! rofl

Jim-Bob Hansen.

He will be born in 3324.

Anatoly Karpov, the man who dug the Suez Canal by hand and invented gravity, was also the strongest chess player who ever lived. When he was born, three wise men followed a star to the place the baby Anatoly lay and declared him World Chess Champion for the next century. He will cease being World Champion in May of 2051. Until then, all others who claim the crown are imposters.

Magnus Carlsen, on the other hand, in the many-horned beast described in the Book of Revelations!

ROFLMAO!

During his 16 years reign as undisputed world champion, Karpov won many blitz and rapid tournaments, much more than anybody else.

Undisputed 16 years? Give me a break!

Hikaru is the best player I think...

Atleast I included Fischer and Carlsen in my list. :) Thanks for contributing to this discussion.

Anyone know if Morphy was an excellent speed chess player?

SmyslovFan

Every world champion except Botvinnik excelled at blitz chess. Capa, Alekhine, Tal, Petrosian, Fischer, Karpov, Kasparov were all great blitz players.

But the internet age has really made a huge difference for blitz players. Today's players have really refined the art form.

Nakamura is one of the greatest blitz players ever. A few years ago, he and Carlsen sat down and played a long blitz match (something like 40 games). Carlsen won that match.

For me, Carlsen's the greatest blitz player ever.

That answer may change in the next few years.

I agree about Carlsen. Not so sure I would consider blitz an art form.

I agree. It is no surprise that the best chess player in the world currently, also happens to be the best blitz player too.

The youtube comments explain more about it. Carlsen won, 24.5-15.5.

Wow! Such a shame we don't have the opportunity to see him play here on chess.com like Naka! :(

Go on youtube and search:

thetwits icc -felixg2012

thetwits is (or at least was) Carlsen's ICC account name.

-felixg2012 because the idiot posts videos moving his mouse all over the screen so it's hard to watch the game.
