Well, that was certainly long.
WHO IS THE GREATEST CHESS PLAYER OF ALL TIME? Defend your answer...

bobby fischer because of his superior psychological strategy which undoubtedly evident on fischer-spassky 1972 match! Spassky was caught by surprise on fischer's opening on game 6, and fischer introduced a move 11....Nh5 which was completely against theory.

I know this guy named George and he has not lost a game in 10 years.
He sent a challenge to Carlsen a year ago and still no response.

HAAAAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA !!!!!!! NOW THATS FUNNY. GEORGE KASPAROV. GARRY'S SON?? LOL!

what's the point of arguing who's the greates player of all time conforming only to our own thoughts! to be certain of the answer, let's ask the Grandmasters themselves whom they have proclaimed for such title:
I was the strongest from 1964 to 1970, but in 1971 Fischer was already stronger. - Boris Spassky
I mean, most of modern chess is his offering. Myself and the rest had those moves ready for us when we started out, but it had to take someone to discover them first. Bobby Fischer was that person. He was that person for entire generations of chess players. His was a singular life in that sense. He's made it easier for us today. - Viswanathan Anand
What I admired most about him was his ability to make what was in fact so difficult look easy to us. I try to emulate him. - Magnus Carlsen
Bobby Fischer is the greatest Chess genius of all time! - Alexander Kotov
I believe that Fischer surpassed all the former and currently living grandmasters in the ability to produce and process chess ideas. - Anatoly Karpov
If only I had had my duel with Fischer, my fighting level would be of a higher order. Once I had attained and mastered such a level - a level which for Kasparov is completely unattainable - I would have recalled it whenever necessary. - Anatoly Karpov
Fischer’s beautiful chess and his immortal games will stand forever as a central pillar in the history of our game. - Garry Kasparov
therefore, it is just pointless to say that it was kasparov, karpov, carlsen or the others considering the fact that they even proclaimed fischer to be the greatest!!!Some voted for these guys to be the greatest, yet in contrast, these grandmasters in unity voted for fischer!!

None of those quotes say that he is the greatest player of all time. The closest one is Kotov's but, unless we know when he said that, we don't know who is included in that opinion.

of course its just logical that anybody would not literally say that line because nobody has yet live since morphy until these modern days.. the best barometer to determine who's the greatest is to have them meet on the board. But since its not possible, it would be wiser though to believe on their opinions/thoughts/assessments on fischer's play. and i believe grandmasters are highly intellectual persons and they would not allow words coming from their mouth of absent reason. Thus, when they have said it, they truly mean it.

I don't doubt that they mean what they say, I am saying that non of them claim Fischer is the best of all time, except Kotov who, on investigation, died in 1981 before seeing Kasparov in his prime or Carlsen - the two main contenders.
Lets take them one at a time -
Spassky - Says that Fischer was stronger than him in 1971. Big deal. Spassky isn't part of the conversation for greatest of all time. Nobody disputes that Fischer was stronger than him. He's telling us something we already know.
Anand - Anand credits him with being a trailblazer. A guy who came up with some brilliant ideas on the board. Nobody here disagrees with that. What Anand also says, in the quote you provided, is that, because of Fischer, the players of today have these moves avaiable to them already. This makes it easier for the modern players. This has been the anti-Fischer argument all along. That players of today are better based on the greater study material available to them. He does not say Fischer is the greatest of all time.
Carlsen - He simply says that he tries to emulate his style of play because he made things look easy. This is not saying he is the greatest of all time. It is saying that he is an inspiation to Carlsen. Fine. Pele was an inspiration to millions of footballers, he still isn't a better player than half of the players around today. They have better training equipment, better diet, better knowledge of the sport. Sport evolves.
Kotov - Died before Kasparov had even won the world title or made a name for himself
Karpov - He surpassed all GMs in coming up with chess ideas. Fine. That's more or less what Anand said. Players of today still have all of those ideas available to them for training purposes (not to mention machines). That doesn;t mean he's the strongest of all time. It means that he probably was at one time, but more importantly has helped make todays players stronger with his ideas.
Regarding his 'duel' with fischer. He is simply saying that playing Fischer would have made him a stonger player. Also, it would have helped him against Kasparov. This doesn't say that he thinks he would lose to Fischer. He is saying that playing him would have upped his game. All great players improve their game by playing the best possible opponents. Not once in that statement does Karpov imply he would have lost though.
Kasparov - He is saying, again, more or less the same as Anand. The ideas he came up with will forever be remembered in chess and form a 'central pillar'....fine. We've covered this. Not once does he say that he thinks Fischer is better than him.
If you read these quotes and all you take from them is that Fischer was the greatest, then you didn't understand them.

of course its just logical that anybody would not literally say that line because nobody has yet live since morphy until these modern days.
--thus, i intended this to be my very first line on my previous post.. may i ask you, whta should be the barometer then in determining the greatest player??

I'm not repeating all of that. This is page 20, all the thoughts on 'Greatest Player' have been posted 200 times already. Read back. I have already given my thoughts on that.

Karpov said that he thought he might get beaten by Fischer in 1975, but that he'd beat Fischer in 1978. That says pretty conclusively what he thought of Fischer being the all-time greatest player.

here is a recent interview with Carlsen and he says that Kasparov was the greatest of all time.

Fischer was a raving lunatic, and recieves more credit than he deserves because he was American. That being said, he was a superb chess player, but only for a very short amount of time. It's just like we don't consider Morphy in the race; he played for too short a time.
Kasparov is the greatest. Just scroll through this thread and ignore the Fischer supporters, and you'll see why.
just because the engine doesnt agree with fischer the most, doesnt mean he wasnt the best player
Actually it is probably the best indicator we have. No human alive can pick better moves than Houdini.
So why is it that Grischuk ranks second in Houdini-move-matching at the 2013 Candidates, yet he finished in the bottom half of the tournament table?
