But if everyone believed in that sort of school-assembly-speech stuff, there would be no cheating.  So there must be some reason they're doing it...and I doubt very much that it's laziness.

You  miss the point tonydal.I ask why they deny themselves opportunity not why they cheat .That answer is simple they cheat because winning overides their moral responsibility to play fair.

Define "opportunity" Xandy. You're acting like cheaters are missing out on some huge payoff when they cheat their way to wins. Opportunity to become a better player? If no one knows you're cheating, then what's the difference between being a good player and having everyone think you're a good player? Opportunity for personal accomplishment? Lots of people are perfectly satisfied with taking things that belong to other people and claiming it as their own without any guilt. Opportunity for awards/success? Even if you reach 2000 FIDE or 2200 USCF, there's not a huge payoff waiting for you. And it pales in comparison to all the work you have to do to get there!

You enjoy chess, you're pretty good at it, and you like to win. So if you're around 1500-1700 and need some help to get over the hump and beat some of these higher rated players that are 1750-1950, then why not just use some help: simple, cheap, and painless with no stress and 100% guarantee to what you want. Cheating is very easy to justiy. Rather than spend 5 years of your life trying to become a 2000 player, you can just to go the store and become a 2000 player in under an hour. You save time, money, and stress.

But the question remains, how sad do you actually have to be to bother? Im the only one concerned with my rating as far as i know!. Im an ok player, i know what i need to do to improve and cheating is not the answer as im not actually improving, but then again im not superficial. Im not here for all the hot chicks!

dadiekool

so thats why my rating is so low   everybody I have played cheated

i knew i wasn't that bad ........ I think

ADK

The cheater wins for as long as he is not caught... Ultimately, they always lose. : )

... But they sure take a lot of people down with them =/

... And sometimes they win. Hello Mcguire, A Rod, Sosa, and Bonds :)

Maya I defined some of the opportunities they deny themselves in the first post, they don't win and they don't get better they cheat and they are eventually found out"you can fool all of the people some of the time and some of the people all of the time but you cant fool all of the people all of the time"ring any bells.Chess is fundamentally a over the board game at sometime they will play someone eye to eye and be found wanting. Then they will wish they hadn't cheated.

The cheater is not the winner, the program he is using is. no-one who cheats can be described as a winner, despite the outcome of the game...

cheater should not be treated as winner.

It's obvious isn't it - to prove to themselves they can use their mouse to click and follow instructions!

Are you speaking generally or with reference to someone.

The why of cheating is very interesting. I asked cheater_1 himself. Here is his answer:

"SARKINAIKI, there's no need to worry about offending me. The reason I cheat is very complex. Here's a BRIEF history as to why I took up cheating.

I have been playing for over 30 years and never got to the level I DESERVED. I am currently about 1900 uscf. I feel I deserve to be at least 2300. I took the easy way out to get to 2300 and beyond.

I got tired of losing to loudmouth PUNKS who mopped the board with me and then kicked me when I was down. I sold my SOUL to be able to get my revenge.

I liked the sense of power I got when I CRUSHED a legitimate master.

It was a challenge to masquerade as a GM. I pulled it off thousands of times and should have got an oscar or something like that.

Playing computer aided chess is not ALL I do. I do play legitimately when I KNOW I will be playing another legit player (friends or family). The problem is, I do NOT use this name when playing legitimately if I play on the www. I do not play chess at all on this site, so it is impossible to play me legitimately and know you did.

I'm addicted to program vs program play. Legit chess does very little for me now."

Does he say why he was deserving of that rating.I deserve to be a millionaire but I'm not about to rob a bank to do it.

That dude has issues, i deserve this, i deserve that.Who says you deserve anything. "I sold my soul to be able to get my revenge". Absolutely brilliant, in case it escaped you, you in fact did not gain any revenge, a computer did. Jesus get over it. Who cares about losing a game in the long scheme of things?
