Who should my Chess Heores/Teachers be?

Hi folks. So, I'm new to chess, playing since April. I'm terrible at Blitz and have vowed never to play again. 30 Rapid is my thing. I'm only 750, but I am getting better painfully slowly. I don't make too many blunders. I lack imagination and this means that I seem to play better defensively. But I like this! I've kept notes, and:- I'm better at black; the Knight is my favourite piece; as long as it's not too complicated I like slower, more positional games; I'm most creative defending; I like it when my opponent overcommits and then has some holes in his defence; lately I've played a few really nice counter-punching sudden checkmates built out of defending; I like to avoid gambits; I am concentrating for now on just 2 white openings and 2 black defences; and I want to be solid. So who should my Chess Heroes/teachers be? Whose games and videos should I be watching??? Thank you

anyone could be your heroes or villains..you just need to learn from anyone with good records, take every teaching that favors you, leave the rest

Thanks guys. The Nimzo recommendation was really helpful.

Don't play passively. It's harmful for your development as a chess player. Seek complications. That's what's going to make you improve in the long run

Guys…. You don’t have to flatter me. I’m not quite fit to be your teacher 😂. Jk about the whole thing. I would watch GothamChess if I was you. He has very instructional beginner opening, middlegame planning, and endgame videos.

Bobby Fischer is a good point-of-departure for learning about chess. He was himself, of course, very accomplished, and for all the insights of his own playing style, he seemed to have a good understanding of the historical developments in chess playing style. So I have always found his books very instructive (in terms of helping your strategy and tactics) and informative (as to key developments or moments in chess history).

Funnily enough before reading this post I read Bobby Fischer Teaches Chess. So, excellent recommendation, thanks.

“Bobby Fischer teaches chess” was not written by Bobby. Get “My 60 memorable games” if you want something written by Bobby.

Okay, will do, thanks Ubik42

Gotham is good. Also, Daniel Naroditsky, John Bartholomew, and good ol Yazzzz... Yasser Seirawan. I love how he explains everything.

Daniel Naroditsky will play 10 minute games and explain what he thinking as he's playing, WHY he's choosing moves. The games might have 5 second increment too so plenty of time for him to teach while he's in the middle of the games. Good stuff.

Yaz smiles like a psycho and he takes 4 minutes to say one sentence because he craves everything looking at him. 🙄 I can only handle 2 minutes of that guy.

Siegbert Tarrasch had a very principled and "classical" style. He also was good with explaining his ideas. I recommend Tarrasch's book "Three Hundred Chess Games".

Hahaha.  He does have a drawn out style of explaining stuff though. I can relate. I only watch his vids when I'm falling asleep. But the way he explains is easy to remember.

Only recently did I discover Naroditsky and his slower games with explanation while he's playing.

I like Yaz. Did you ever see the video of him explaining the famous Nezhmetdinov/Polugaevsky game? A great story and a great game!

Alireza Firouzja plays some fantastic games.

Yeah, I watched that video about 5 days ago. Yasser was saying Polugaevsky said he'd beaten Nezhmetdinov 12 times but lost that 1 game. Everybody seemed to remember that 1 game though. Probably because Polugaevskys king ran all over Russia. Yasser just has to tell the stories behind the games. Good entertainment.
