Who will win the candidates and who will win the WC

Good point.

If Magnus declines to play the winner of this event (we can pretty sure it won't be Firouzja by now) it would make sense to have 1st and 2nd from this event play a match. It would be the most logical for a wc title match because if it is between Nepo and Fabi they're the last 2 challengers to the wc. However,  everybody on earth will know that Magnus is still the best.

Fabi's gotta win this. He's just gotta.

DreamscapeHorizons

Well if he doesn't he's only gonna be 1 point behind Nepo and 7 games are still left.  Nepo might relax a bit from having such a good first half. As of right now stockfish 15 is saying Fabi has a 3.15 advantage after 47 moves.

I've read more than one reputable opinion that Caruana is one of the best calculators. Let's see if he can calculate this win.

Yep, he got the win cleanly.

thebully99

If Nepo wins, Carlsen will give his decision by end of July.

If Caruana wins, Carlsen will give his decision in August

Pulpofeira

Too many w's.

Fabi's play has been best. Nepo's been almost as good, but has had some luck.

A lot can happen in the 2nd half.

DreamscapeHorizons

I'm still picking Fabi to win.

Round 9 will be Fabi vs Nepo on Monday.  Given how far ahead they are above 3rd place Naka, it'll be the biggest game of the tournament up to that point.

Both Nepo and Fabi are doing so well they're a full 1.5 points ahead of 3rd place.

FIDE Candidates Tournament

Ian Nepomniachtchi 5.5/7 (+4 -0 =3) [games]
Fabiano Caruana 5/7 (+3 -0 =4) [games]
Hikaru Nakamura 3.5/7 (+1 -1 =5) [games]
Richard Rapport 3/7 (+0 -1 =6) [games]
Jan-Krzysztof Duda 3/7 (+0 -1 =6) [games]
Ding Liren 3/7 (+0 -1 =6) [games]
Teimour Radjabov 2.5/7 (+0 -2 =5) [games]
Alireza Firouzja 2.5/7 (+0 -2 =5) [games]

Hey, Naka has 3rd place all to himself.  That's very good at the half way point.  It's higher than I thought he'd be.

Yeah, Naka's done better than expected.

It was nice to see him in post game interviews acting like a mature adult. He's really changed. I like the new him a lot better.

Maybe the maturity has leveled out his play, lets him concentrate and make more rational decisions or something. I don't know.

" it's too bad he played the WC so poorly"
++ Nepo played the first 5 games of the WC very well and almost won game 2 with black.
Then he lost a table base drawn position in the 136-move marathon game 6 and then he collapsed mentally with errors in otherwise drawn positions.

Has he fooled around in interviews before? I havent been following him that long.

I think Nepo will win candidates, but Caruana can i think nepo will win candidates but if caruana work very hard he can win candidates

ricorat

I think most of us can agree that the winner will be Fabi or Ian due to how big their lead is over the others. Nepo had a quick draw against Ding today, but Fabi-Naka looks like a 3 result game!

DreamscapeHorizons

Naka was all like  "bring it!"  and Fabi was all like "oh it's been brought!".

The fact that Naka was able to out-prep Fabi is pretty impressive!

DreamscapeHorizons

Quite an array of pawns Fabi has. It looks like he's got like 40 of em dominating the center and q side.

MaetsNori

Hikaru is slightly better than Fabi, according to the engine.

But Fabi's position is easier to play (more space, very natural moves to play with), while Hikaru's position is a bit more difficult to play (less space, more unnatural moves to play with).

DreamscapeHorizons

Oh,  I just noticed the 2 cellar dwellers are paired this round. So that's kind of an important game for psychological reasons.

DreamscapeHorizons

Yes, Fabi and Nepo.

llama36

Yuck, Naka might win that game.

Not only do I want him to lose in general, but if he beats Fabi then it's almost guaranteed Nepo will win, which also isn't ideal.

ricorat

It appears the engine does not like Fabi's 27.Nc5? If Naka plays 27...h5! he'll have a healthy advantage!
