Hi there I'm new to chess and me and my husband have just started playing so I'm a bit confused with some of the rules! Is it right u cant move your king in to check? What happens if u do? Last night we were playing and i had my king left my husband had his king queen and rook. He got me in to a corner and the only move i would make would have put me in check but where i was at that time was safe so i couldn't move does that mean he won or was it a draw?

Id appreciate any tips on this game to help me improve on it

thanks Melissa xx

That position is called "draw by stalemate".  It is a draw, and the reason why it is illegal for a king to move into check is because, in theory, he would then be taken and the game over.  For practical reasons it was agreed that the king is not taken, but that a position where taking the king cannot be avoided on the next move is considered a win/loss.

Hi Melissa,

It is correct that your King is not allowed to move onto a square which would place you in check (this includes moving to an adjoining square with your opponent's King).

If it is your turn to move and you have no legal move , then this is known as a stalemate position and that is a draw. This rarely happens - when it does it is usually the same scenario as the game between you and your husband , where one of the two players has a vast excess of pieces and pawns left.    It is good to be aware of if you are likely to lose a game because you can allow your opponent to take your pieces leaving you with only a King left with no legal move  , and perhaps blocked pawns which cannot move either.

So , well escaped !

In spite of the superiority in material, yes it's a draw (stalemate).  It's a way of "punishing" the player for not playing properly.  To avoid this, always account for all 8 squares where a king can potentially go--allow the opponent king some space, even if you move back temporarily (called a waiting move).
