Im relatively new to chess only been playing for a few months heavily so I understand ill get beat a lot but I can't seem to get out of the 700s in 5 min but in standard i have improved from 800s to over 1000 this week. I understand that is still low but I don't even stand a chance vs people over 800 in 5 min chess any tips to improve my 5 min? Should I try the 1/2 to improve because it seems since I have been playing lots of 5 min standard got a little easier

Tactics trainer, spam tactics and you will improve in fast games.

Also the pool of players in blitz/bullet may be significantly stronger than of standard.

Learn to play the opening as quickly as possible while still looking out for your opponent's tactics. Time is material in blitz, so you don't want to lose time on moves you can study outside the game.

Also, you can play 5+2 time controls, since it's in the same rating group as 5 min.

I feel like it is so hard to make split second decisions this is probably just because i have only been playing seriously for like 2 months

man. those who masterd this took years to learn.. it is not easy or that hard try playing 30 min + games with oppoents rated above you..sure you will lose a tonne.. but you will realise after some weeks that you can start beating others...

It's probably a good idea to play games with longer time controls so you can think through your moves.  Short time control games are an extra challenge for people who have the mainlines memorized.  Also, after you've completed your games, download the pgn, load it up on something like SCID, and without using an engine, analyze your own game with self annotations before running the moves through engine analysis.

Playing high quantity, short time control games as a beginner is just practicing bad habits imho.

if you listen to what you said you will find the anwser...easy.

If your taking your time to make moves what makes you think you do better moving fast. I know you may feel a comfort zone in those games and find them exicitng. You have to take time out and sit down and look over your moves and see where is the better move. When you get back to the game then you can make. Have to come into those games well Prepared at some level if you want to win a couple.

In order to make a good decision it has to be based on some knowledge you acquired on that subject. Go back over the game and look at what your opponents did to beat you in a game. If it worked for them chances it will work for you also. If you do not like it keep learning and playing unto you find some style of play you like. Also Random moves is the number one reason for losing a game. 2nd is hoping your opponet does not see what you are try to do in the game.

I will echo the sentiment: play longer time controls. It's the best way to improve.

rooperi

Yup, slower games will improve your blitz. Blitz wont improve your slower games.

red-lady

Even in longer time controls: don't move without thinking. Certainly not when you are playing strong players. One bad move and 'your position is getting worse' as the computer analysis so beautifully says. Another bad move and 'forget it, you just lost the game' Wink

Seraphimity

sometimes obvious is good to.  like keep your rooks communicating and your bishops on long diagonals.  Practice pawn avalaches, moving your connected pawns down the board supported by minor pieces.  Put your rooks where there is likely to be an open file.  Send me a challeng I too strugle on 5 minute games and am looking to improve..

Play at time control that doesn't squeeze you on the clock, and ALWAYS put a 5 or 10 second bonus into your "Open Seeks."

Most players can learn (effectively) at practice speeds between Game in 10/5 and Game in 30/5.  If that's too fast for you, "hit the books" until you learn the game better.

Then return to playing on the site, or wherever.  Simple.

Blitz shud be for master players to drill themself with or for other players who jus dont have much time. But ppl get addicted 2 it n play more 4 da clock than the chess. Then their egos get big over a stupid internet rating n some of them id luv to play at 15 5 jus 2 see if they even knew what 2 do haha. I agree standard makes u better at blitz but blitz makes nuthin better except useless ratings. Whatever u do i think endgames r important. But in blitz u dont get 2 play them wit enuff time 2 think about them.

Agree with the several who counsel:  play slower time limits.

Speed chess is a fun variant.  It doesn't help you improve your game at all.  Chess is a thinking game of patience, strategy, and calculation.  If you learn to play chess first, you will be able to play speed chess variants better too.

Think of it this way:  speed chess is a fun way to show how fast you can display your chess ability.  Until you develop some chess ability, there is nothing to display.

This sums it up nicely.

you know what to do now!

I went through the same thing back this summer when I started playing 'seriously'; I got mauled in a bunch of blitz games. Then I played a lot of online turn based games - one to three days per move. Now that I'm playing some blitz games again, I've won 7 in a row.

bronsteinitz

It is evident that you need to play chess well, if you want to play well fast.

I see however no reason to say that Blitz is more of a display than slow games. It is just another way of playing, and it gives a young brain an unfair advantage over an older one Undecided

I believe that our brainpower deteriorates from our late twenties. And blitz requires processing speed.

In my club we play blitz once a month and it is always our top evening. Probably because you get to play many friends in an entertaining way, but the games are great.

I also believe that you can learn while playing blitz. It is very reflexes driven. I do not think Blitz is useless. It is like sprinting. It is different from a marathon, but not useless. Very good players often LOVE blitz and it has nothing to do with points. It has to do with their love for the game. Fischer, Carlsen,.. they all LOVE blitz. Carlsen seems to like 1 minute games a lot. 1 minute for him and 5 for his opponent Laughing
