Why am I so slow???

I've been trying to grind my blitz rating up for a while now.

So my rapid rating is 1500, OTB is 1550, and my blitz rating is 1100 nervous

for some reason there is always one part of the game where I spend like 1 minute just thingking about something stupid that I would normally do in 2 seconds. Then, I suddenly have 30 seconds on the clock with no delay or anything so I lose. If I don't do this so often my blitz rating would probably be like 1500.

It's started to happen to me in Bughouse now too. shock

Any tips?

Literally in the exact situation. Rapid and Bullet I'm always fine and have the upper hand on time. But in blitz everything changes, I get so much slower. Build up an exchange or up a piece or better position and time pressure fails. The flagger becomes the flagee

yeah, cry

Bullet logic is to just do the first move you think of, blitz logic is to think, but don't try to plan super far ahead. It's better to prioritize simple moves in blitz than complex ones. Rapid time controls allow you to think for as long as you want on neat situations. For blitz, don't think more than 4 or 5 moves ahead, but make a mental note for when you are reviewing your game. More than that, and the time investment becomes too high to justify the cost of thinking. That said, it's easier said than done, because in the moment you get exited about your tactic and want to see what happens, but SAVE IT FOR THE REVIEW.

PS. Can you help me get to 1500 rapid?

Sure, mostly all you have to do is just work on puzzles and tactics. A lot of people at your rating just play the first move that comes to their mind and that's why they're 400 and im 1500. So the key is to take your time but also be good at speed chess if you get into time pressure

Actually I like rapid best, but in the ~600 range blitz and bullet is far west, no one playes normal openings, just traps like IBCM gambit or halloween gambit. I do a lot of thinking before I move, but for some reason im still at 600. I was 200 like a month ago because of that reason, but I can pretty easily beat 1500 bots and have a 65% win rate. Do I just need to be patient and wait for my raiting to go up?

Improve your ability to play quickly by solving puzzles and studying common patterns.

If it was bullet, I would suggest you to practise flagging tricks, some traps, premoves and such

but blitz is based on too much experience, no tricks.. just you need to be familiar with all kind of positions. usually masters play good blitz to ensure no one is cheating (and not to get bored)

me.. I don't play them both. I'm just sharing my observations.

Accept that is your level and you won't get any better, I have, there is only so much you can improve your thinking time by and once you reached that limit, that is your lot.

Yeah, although the thing is that I don't have a mouse to pre-move on, I only hve a keypad. I should prrobably just get a mouse to be faster huh? wink

Well I need to get better under time pressure!

Can you explain me why do you think “you need to get better in time pressure”?
Avatar of pyraminxmaster2013

Because, if you only play raoid or classical what would happen if you end up getting 2 minutes left? How will u manage if you don't know how to react.Especially if you are a slow player

I am still not sure what your actuall goal is. If you want to be good in slow chess, just play slow chess and eventually you will get good in it. If you want to be good at speed chess than play speed chess but you will never good at slow chess.

Yes, but don't you want to be good at both? Especially since you yourself are about the same rating online at rapid and blitz

Play more games, focus on one time format at a time.

Getting good at chess usually requires you to play many games. Imo you need at least 100 games per month for rapid, more for faster formats. So far this month you have only played around 40 blitz games, that's simply not enough.

It's good that you have 1500 rapid, it will help you get blitz rating, but you have to focus on 1 time format. I can see you play both 5 and 3 min, probably best to specialize in 1 for each month.

Also I would not expect rapid and blitz to be 100% the same. I think for most players rapid is a bit easier, but it also depends on your specific talents.

Good news is you seem to win every game where you are up on time, so don't be afraid to play a bit faster. It's just blitz, so expect to blunder.
