Why are back rank checkmates so frequent in puzzles?

If there's one single pattern I've intuitively learned from puzzles, it's those back rank checkmates... but getting so many of them makes me feel like I'm just bolstering my puzzle rating with the same ideas over and over again.

The concept usually involves a stacked queen and rook, forcing the king deeper into his own pieces before trading or eliminating his defenders that ends in a formidable checkmate once the dust settles.

Are back rank checkmates something to try and develop live games into or are they kind of the result of weak oppositional play?
