Obviously, the separation of men's and women's titles and events in chess is absurd. Just as insulting as "Affirmative Action" in the U.S. There are some well meaning ideas and people behind this absurdity. But, no doubt, it remains absurd, with no end in sight.

And I have no clue why only Judith Polgar has broken into the top ten.

I agree that they're not necessary anymore. I don't know why so many women insist on playing in women only tournaments. I think it's stupid. One reason about the Judith thing could be that there are less women playing. I think a lot of men enjoy the feeling that they're in an elite, men only group. "We're in a club that women aren't good enough for." kind of egoism.

I agree about the 'men's club' thing, and everything else you said. And I already know why women continue to play in "Women only" tournaments. Because they are people. People taking advantage of the system. It's definitely, in the end, a  question of ethics.

you made quite a jump from "people taking advantage of the system" (which implies that the error is on the system rather than on the particular choice made by the female players participating on it) to "it's definitely, in the end, a  question of ethics" (which questions individual choices and leads us to judge them).

The only time I jumped is when I read that I was jumping. People taking advantage of a system, and that choice being an ethical one is consistent. You do not point out anything other than that.

You saying that ethical choices made by an individual leads us to judge them, is an assumption. People's ethical choices do not lead me to judge them at all. I only judge those I am most concerned with. This is not one of those times. It is obviously an ethical matter for those who choose to participate in these events. I find the system absurd and insulting to women. But if they choose to participate, I am not offended. There are much more important things in this world to reflect upon.

Ethics is a stretched and over-used term, so I might have missed you there. I did assume you were making a judgement because I took the word in the everyday sense that differentiates right and wrong (i.e. it would be unethical to accept the segregation), specially since the word was put just after the sentence "people taking advantage of the system", which I read as a negative remark. Apparently you meant it in the broader sense that people orient their actions to pursue the most convenient results, as a general rule, with which I agree. That should settle it.

This is something that has puzzled me for years now. Men and women play in seperate tournaments. Women are not at a physical disadvantage like sport, so why, statistically, are men better at chess than women?

bcoz they are at a mental disadvantage.. is the simple answer ..........and this has puzzled u for years?! u must b a woman im guessing???

CerebralAssassin

because women have inferior spatial reasoning skillz (same reason few women are engineers, mathematicians)

Why are men better than women? They are not. At least, they are not, on chess.com Smile. And what FirebrandX said.

pdela

It seems geniality happens more often in males.

Ok, now you can star to swear me.

Travisjw

Because all men have two heads!   I know this because my ex always accused me of letting the wrong one do the thinking! Innocent   Obviously twice as much thinking leads to twice as good chess Wink

It's not that men are any better, it's just that the ratio of male to female players is totally one-sided in favor of males. I argue that if you had an equal number of male and female players, all with the same training and age, both sides would have equal chess talant.

I agree, I once heard a stat that chess was 95% male. When I go to large adult tournaments, i seems to me to be more than that. I'm guessing that if it is as little as 5% women it must also be including scholastic players which will also skew the rating curve downward. Smaller pool, generally smaller deviations from the mean.

yes nurture influences but what about nature issues.

chess = simple rules

Because only men would sit around a board game taking it this seriously. And I agree, Chess is serious business, however I am a man. I enjoy thinking philosphically and am not easily entertained by many mindless activities or shows. Chess is important to me on many levels. Many people that play Chess might fall into this Category and probably more males are drawn to this as opposed to females. I also wonder how many Chess players are Introverts by birth, As Chess is one persons mind vs another. Chess could be a place for certain introverted females to channel some energy just like many of us. When it comes to the big stage I think more men take it more seriously and simply put in more effort. Look at Fischer, he probably played Chess in his dreams more times then any of us have ever played in our lives.

Some of these points are very interesting. I believe the ratio between male and female players is a big factor. I don't think men are 'naturally' better at chess. Thanks for replying

To even bring up the subject, shows certain insecurities in your manhood. Theirs not one player, including masters on this site who could beat Judith Polgar in a match. And who was that women in the recent U S A Championships who more then held her own against the men.
