Why are most GMs not good looking?

Capa was classier than Alekhine and more popular with the ladies, too, from what I can understand.

Giri is the best looking

How? I messaged him on his birthday. But he never really logs on to chess.com

Last year. His birthday is tommorow.

Any means of contacting him?

Address anything...

I'm not gay and would be the last person who would know anything about men courting men and what is appropriate today. I'm absolutely positive there are a ton of guys on here who can help you, though.

So, according to you, chess players are disproportionately both ugly and homosexual.

I mean... such comments says more about you than us bruh.

Chess players look pretty average to me.

No. But it looks like he is trying too hard to do something.

Overall I think most grandmasters are not good looking because of grade school. When I was in grade school I noticed something that I saw repeated 25 years later when my kids were in grade school. I played on the school team (and in a couple of tournaments) and it didnt take long for me to feel out of place. The comments, the type of people, etc. The boys who were above average or even good looking quickly lost interest in chess and moved on to other things like football, baseball, girls, golf, or tennis. The ones that were a little more awkward or homely stayed and played chess. I know there are exceptions, but that seemed to be the rule, and probably still is.

GMs are just people like the rest of us. As the average person is, well, average, so is the typical GM. I don't think the answer is more complex than that. This is a rather silly thread.

(The above being said there are or have been plenty of decent-looking high-ranked players - one thinks of Capablanca, Anna Muzychuk, Sofia Polgar, a young Bent Larsen and (I hate to say it), a young Fischer - to name just a few who come to mind...)

I mean, we can joke about this endlessly but it is in fact a little strange that virtually none of history's grandmasters - and none of our gm's today - are at all what women would consider attractive. We're really just talking genetic odds here and it seems that Chess has bucked those odds for some reason. Let's also face it: Not a lot of guys are very good looking, period but still - You would think one of the top players of the game today would be even remotely easy on the eyes.

it also seems like chess either attracts those who lack social skills or takes away from developing them, making most GMs socially awkward, which is a huge obstacle when it comes to dealing with women.

your observation rings very true. Why do you think it happens though ?

Don't argue with me: I didn't create the thread.

I don't know what a good random sample would be.

The first group of GMs that come to mind are the top 10 players and the GMs I see at the Saint Louis chess club videos, and I guess world champions, national champions... ok, that's enough.

14 married, followed by 9 unmarried (AFAIK)

Except you don't actually know any GMs in person.

It's just pop-culture nonsense (or maybe wishful thinking) that if someone excells in one area, they must be equally deficient in another. So someone is good at chess, you think they must be ugly, homosexual, or socially awkward.

The truth is to succeed (in anything) over a long period of time (chess takes a long time to be good at) you have to be a pretty well put together person. You can't be overly anxious, or dumb. You probably get along well with others. It helps a lot for a man to be married, because the wife will take care of lots of things, and we see that many top GMs are married.

In reality, I would guess if anything, that most strong GMs are better looking, and more sociable on average.

I just wished him happy birthday.

Hm? Petrosian was married with Rona, a woman to be reckoned with, who once slapped one of his seconds if I remember well.

Your mind seems to run quite slow. You can comprehend what I mean I just mean he is my role model. I like his playing style and I can understand it better than any other styles in the top 10. I want to play like Giri.

Ok, I'll switch his.

Oh, and Karpov was / is married too, I think I put him in the wrong pile.
