Why are players from some countries better than others?

Thumbs down for the video post as well.  Oh well.  Guess these kids give a thumbs down when they get their test results in school as well.

Oh, it was a series, not a movie.

And yeah, it's a bit awkward isn't it... giving a thumbs down without posting anything...

person who posted video: "must be those dang unintelligent kids again"

Reality: "person is a physician and also has a masters degree in chemistry".

The video you have shown is debatable in many aspects, including the statistics based on where the demographics are taken in the USA.

I'm not going to get into it, but as someone posted earlier, USA has the best university education in the world according to most ranked sources.

Probably because you can get a thumbs down for a post but not for a thumbs up/down. A thumbs down would be devastating to my fragile robotic ego.

But sure, back on topic, a 1300 from one country preforms exactly as well as a 1300 from another.

When they don't, their rating is adjusted up or down accordingly... that's the beauty of the rating system, and if you like, the beauty of chess in general. It doesn't matter where you come from or who you are. In every game, all the moves are available for both players to find.

In OTB tournaments I've lost to homeless people, transgender people... little kids (mercy, we've all lost to little kids)... and I've beaten doctors, lawyers, and people with fancy degrees from big name schools. The point being that society tends to view these types of people very differently, but on a chessboard none of that matters. Only good moves matter.

lol, more thumbs down.

Listen Mr Chemist-Physician, stop, please, it's embarrassing for an adult to behave this way.

All it took was a light jibe for your reveal, assuming you didn't make that up.

Also assuming most of the players flying that flag are from the top universities from there may not be valid.  Many are kids.  Some don't have university education. Some get it from community colleges (nothing won't with that). Some fly other flags. Some foreigners fly that flag. We could keep going.

But after all that, I don't think academic performance and chess skills correlate.  I'm not even sure how intelligence correlates to either.

I do however think the op's question is a well framed one.  I'd noticed the time of day effect as well but was not as diligent to compile any other statistics.  Just lazily assumed I was playing tired drunk folks at that time.

Expecting thumbs down from tired drunks who have advanced degrees ...

chessterchief

well, if this is number of grandmasters, Russia. no, i don't like them ether, but they have the most grandmasters and a ton of world champions.

US and Canadian education [sic] is complete and utter garbage, that’s why.  Most everyone on Earth is brighter than Americans and Canadians, today, the majority of which are two standard deviations below the average.  In other words, functionally retarded.

Europeans and Asians will always outperform people from North America at chess, just as they do everything else.

As a Canadian, I agree with the statement about Canada. But US education produced so many experts and people like the founder of Google, Facebook, and pretty much anything else. Just because you are jealous of their education doesn't mean that you should try to make yourself feel better by calling it "trash".

if you're Canadian, why are you flying the Russian flag?

I have the most fun playing people from France and Italy. I don't know why, they just play with style.

Kowarenai

some are just built different :/

Yea, that answer shows your ignorance. A 1000 player is a 1000 player, a 2000 player is a 2000 player, regardless the country. BTW, America is by far the most technically advanced country in the world. Freedom, at least where it is, only exists because of America. Study your history. Deny it all you want hater, it’s the truth.

Hell yeah! Just ask the Chileans for example.

I mean sometimes certain countries teach certain styles and ways to play that the OP struggles more against. Just an insight from me though.
